Geosyntec provides a wide range of specialized services in the areas of water resources, water supply development, and water conservation throughout the world. Designing effective and sustainable solutions that identify and address issues related to surface water and groundwater supplies can be complex, frequently requiring a multidisciplinary approach. Geosyntec's scientists, engineers, and permitting specialists provide clients with integrated solutions based on decades of experience that balance the needs for water supply development and ecological health. Our practitioners offer a wide range of services that include most elements of water supply development — from initial source analyses, water quality evaluation, and water rights investigations through permitting and design of treatment and conveyance systems to construction management. We consult closely with clients to ensure a thorough understanding of their specific water cycle, allowing them to optimize their system performance and to make informed demand management decisions about their supplies of available water. In just one example, we provide comprehensive water supply services to Nestlé Water North America (NWNA), the largest bottler of spring water in the United States, for their operations in Zephyrhills, Florida. As NWNA's primary water resources contractor in Florida, Geosyntec ensures the client maintains sustainable yields from the natural groundwater system. We initially provided hydrologic studies to determine a spring's safe yield, conducted capture zone analysis, and evaluated other nearby water supplies. We have also provided design, construction oversight, and permitting services for installation of NWNA's production wells at a number of Florida locations, including a bottling plant, a spring site, and a spring water bulk loading facility. During installation of the wells, we monitored water quality parameters to ensure the geochemistry of the production water meets the strict standards of quality set by NWNA. For these sites, we also prepared a Standard of Identity report, which is required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in order to approve the wells for bottled spring water. This report exhibits that the production well is connected hydraulically to the spring and also shares identical water chemistry with the spring. Geosyntec was instrumental in obtaining approval in all states where approval was sought. At these sources, Geosyntec currently performs all sampling and reporting requirements identified by the permit, including groundwater sampling and water quality and level reporting.

Geosyntec's air quality clients need services for emission control, device conceptual design and selection, feasibility, monitoring, evaluation, and optimization for their facilities. We help clients evaluate emission controls under complex regulatory and operational conditions, and we advise them about how to meet emission standards. We also work closely with clients on the selection of air pollution control technologies that minimize operational costs while still meeting the stringent control efficiencies required by federal and local regulations. Selection of optimal control technology includes consideration of the potential for the generation and removal of secondary pollutants such as combustion by-products, reactive compounds, greenhouse gas emissions, or waste or wastewater streams. With expertise in process design, as well as air pollution control technology design, Geosyntec’s engineers develop strategic approaches to complex, multipollutant emission challenges. These challenges are brought about by evolving emission standards on existing equipment and operations, new capital project expansions, facilities, and emission sources. Our portfolio includes finding ways to control gaseous pollutants using methods including scrubbing, adsorption, condensation, catalytic reduction, and oxidation. We also address combustion management and best operating practices for boilers, thermal oxidizers, engines, and combustion devices. In addition, we design particulate filtration, precipitation, and collection systems, dust control approaches, and other ways to control toxic air contaminants. We measure control system performance by applying standard emission measurement protocols, United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) test methods, and other acceptable evolving measurement science to determine compliance or reduction potential for common criteria air pollutants. Our work often addresses emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and particulate matter, as well as toxic air contaminants and dangerous compounds like mercury and sulfur trioxide (SO3). Geosyntec installs state-of-the-practice hardware and software that uses cross-duct laser technology to continuously monitor ammonia (NH3) and SO3. We help clients select continuous emission monitoring system (CEMS) and programs for CEM compliance with federal state and consent decree monitoring provisions. Additionally, we prepare CEM data quality assurance and quality.

Under many jurisdictions, facility owners are required to evaluate potential offsite air quality impacts to gain regulatory approvals. Our clients need consultants with experience running air dispersion models. These models use mathematical algorithms to characterize atmospheric processes, to understand how pollutants disperse, and to predict ambient concentrations of air contaminants. Geosyntec applies models to demonstrate compliance with allowable ground-level concentrations established by regulatory agencies. We have experience applying various air dispersion models ranging from those that predict ground-level concentrations from continuous emission sources to consequence analysis models used to assess impacts from unplanned catastrophic events. We use air dispersion modeling to assist clients with regulatory and nonregulatory air modeling projects, including permit applications to address ambient air quality and air toxic requirements. Our team works closely with clients to assess plant layout and stack location configurations to avoid negative impacts on the regional airshed and local communities. In addition, our practitioners conduct modeling to evaluate potential offsite impacts associated with risk assessments and hazard analyses. Our modelers are experienced with AERMOD/AERSURFACE/AERSCREEN/SCREEN3, CALPUFF, ALOHA, SLAB and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models. Our advanced collection and measurement methods help us generate robust data for air dispersion models that describe the complex behavior of pollutants in the air and how they interact with their environment. Our air dispersion modeling experience includes emerging pollutants such as ethylene oxide (C2H4O) and PFAS. Armed with this data, our engineers and scientists can accurately assess how a source affects a particular area and consult with clients on developing comprehensive environmental management strategies.

Low impact development (LID) aims to mimic natural hydrology by using small-scale, decentralized techniques that infiltrate, evaporate, and transpire rainwater. The guiding principles of LID are to reduce imperviousness, disconnect imperviousness, conserve natural resources and areas, maintain natural drainage courses, and minimize clearing and grading. Geosyntec practitioners have designed and integrated a number of innovative system architectures to help clients meet each of these goals. Through the use of the latest green infrastructure (GI) and by implementing new sustainable practices, many of our clients have addressed challenges that previously were intractable, unachievable, or not cost effective using conventional passive solutions. We provide specialized stormwater and watershed management services for private facilities, large developers, stormwater utilities, and municipal agencies throughout the United States and have implemented many of the nation's first GI projects. Our stormwater management specialists form one of the leading practices in the country and include individuals whose applied research earned the American Society of Civil Engineers Civil Engineering State-of-the-Art Award and similar accolades at the state and regional level. Our firm's efforts in LID are geared to lower costs for stormwater infrastructure and maintenance, improve surface water quality and groundwater recharge, and design an attractive, ecologically functional landscape. We also have incorporated LID approaches into new development and retrofit projects to improve control of both quantity and quality of stormwater. Geosyntec personnel continuously shape the state of the practice with projects that involve original research, development, and application of LID techniques. Our engineers and scientists are represented on the Board of Directors of the Low Impact Development Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancing LID technology, and maintain joint research projects with civil engineering faculty at leading academic institutions.

Geosyntec provides comprehensive water-quality permitting and receiving water-assessment services. Our services include the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting negotiations and technical support for wastewater and industrial wastewater treatment plant discharges, groundwater discharge, combined sewer overflow systems, and stormwater management. Our water-resources practitioners also specialize in water-quality assessments in large watersheds, rivers, and reservoirs. Many of these projects are multi-year efforts where our services have eliminated unnecessary treatment works, saving clients significant costs. Antidegradation and Water-Quality Reviews Antidegradation and water-quality reviews are essential for permitting wastewater discharge expansions. Regulators use these reviews to determine treatment-system requirements and effluent limitations. Permittees must prepare the review submittals for new or expanded treatment plants. These reviews can range in complexity from basic qualitative evaluations to complex modeling scenarios using actual stream data. Using our thorough understanding of antidegradation and water-quality review processes,we help clients select the most appropriate review approaches when pursuing new or expanded wastewater treatment plants.  Regulators with the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and state regulators emphasize water-quality-based permitting of municipal, domestic, and industrial wastewater discharges. They do this to address water-quality concerns and attain water-quality standards within receiving streams, rather than basing permits on technology-based limitations that may not adequately protect the specific water resource. Waste-Load Allocation Geosyntec's water-quality-based permitting and waste-load allocation studies may range greatly in complexity, and regulatory involvement and negotiations are critical elements within such projects. Waste-load allocations may be derived using a variety of approaches, and water-quality-based permit limits are derived after determining the most appropriate and defensible waste-load allocation.  Our engineers and scientists use state-of-the-art field monitoring approaches to calibrate water-quality models and establish appropriate water-quality criteria. We have saved our clients several millions of dollars in infrastructure investments by investigating conservative permit assumptions and ensuring a sustainable balance between resource needs and practical budget constraints.

Geosyntec uses biological assessment and monitoring to create an accurate picture of the affected environment. Our services reliably evaluate the health of streams, rivers, lakes, and ocean environments. In addition, we can offer a less expensive alternative to complex chemical testing programs. Relying on deep experience, our team evaluates the ecological health of a given environment to show how organisms integrate the effects of varied stressors at your site over time. This means Geosyntec can characterize long-term ecological issues and understand the status of highly valued biological communities. By examining a variety of species, their life stages, their survival, and their health, Geosyntec deciphers complex relationships among habitats, bioregions, and ultimately, water and sediment quality. Geosyntec has experienced biologists who efficiently conduct fish and invertebrate collection for both site investigations and NPDES-permit compliance. We also partner with industry-leading laboratories to analyze samples, compile metric scores and data into a project database, and use geographic information system capabilities to define spatial relationships and ensure data consistency and comparability. Geosyntec's biological monitoring services include fish tissue collection for analysis of chemicals of concern; fish population and macroinvertebrate/plankton community studies; fish-kill investigations; and sediment infaunal invertebrate studies. We also conduct habitat inventories and assessments; sediment and water quality toxicity testing; ecological risk assessments; and Natural Resource Damage Assessments. Our practitioners compile environmental impact statements for compliance with National Environmental Policy Act requirements and consult with clients on Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 404 wetland permitting, Section 401 water quality certification, and threatened and endangered species surveys related to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and Section 7 requirements. For more than a dozen clients, Geosyntec has monitored the concentrations of chemicals found in fish tissue over many years. Often, the fish community is exposed to chemicals via direct or indirect uptake from contaminated sediments. By monitoring the fish tissue concentrations over time, the effectiveness of an environmental remedy can be evaluated. Additionally, biota-sediment accumulation models can be developed and refined to support informed management decisions. This has been used for both active remedies (like dredging) and passive remedies (like MNR). These monitoring data provide our clients and the regulatory agencies with an accurate picture of the affected environment.
