Municipal Climate Change and Natural Hazard Vulnerability Assessment in Massachusetts

2026-04-07T09:47:57-06:00October 5th, 2018|

The need for municipalities, regional planning organizations, states, and federal agencies to increase resilience and adapt to extreme weather events and climate change is evident in Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) grant program provides funding for cities and towns to begin planning for climate change resiliency. The Town of Stow received funding through the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) administered MVP program to conduct a Community Resiliency Building (CRB) workshop.

Sea Level Rise Guidance in the San Francisco Bay Area, California

Geosyntec is providing a variety of engineering and permitting services at an oil refinery in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) requires formal engineering closure plans for inactive waste management units (WMUs) at the refinery facility.

Coastal Resiliency Program Phase 1 for the City of St. Augustine, Florida

2026-04-14T08:41:32-06:00September 12th, 2018|

As a result of damaging storms such as Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and ongoing issues related to sea level rise, flooding events are occurring more frequently along the low-lying coastal areas of the City of St. Augustine. Tidal flooding is the most common type of flood event, characterized by spring or king tide events that cause tide waters to enter urban areas even without storm events.

TIDEGateway Geodatabase and Climate Change Modeling in Massachusetts

Tide gates are used to drain and manage areas which tides regularly cover for agricultural or other uses. The purpose of this project was to perform a state-wide tide gate inventory, then to use information from the inventory to develop a comprehensive and easy-to-use web-based geospatial analysis tool with information and planning tools related to tide gates in Massachusetts.

Future 100-Year Flood Elevation Map Project for Broward County, Florida

2026-04-02T16:08:31-06:00September 12th, 2018|

The goal of the project is to establish a baseline for future resiliency for Broward County, Florida buildings and infrastructure to prepare for projected sea level rise and climate-change induced hydrological changes. The overall result will be reducing flood risk for development and re-development, while increasing the sustainability of structures over their lifespan. The future 100-year flood elevation map will be incorporated into county code. Leveraging the results of the 100-year flood mapping, the county will establish new regulatory criteria for setting finished floor elevations for development and re-development throughout the county.

Quantitative Risk Assessment for a Floating Production Storage and Offloading in Brazil

2026-04-02T17:05:12-06:00May 8th, 2016|Tags: , , , , , |

Geosyntec undertook a quantitative risk assessment (QRA) for the Cidade de Paraty Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, which will operate in the Lula oil field. The Lula oil field, which is the largest hydrocarbon find in the world since the Kazakh Kashagan discovery in 2000, is located in the Santos Basin, 250km south of Rio de Janeiro. It is estimated to hold five to eight billion barrels of oil equivalent. Due to the size of the field and the water depth, which in areas is in excess of 2000m, it will be developed using a number of FPSOs.

This site was originally developed in the mid-1800s for the production of linseed oil. In the 1900s, manufacturing operations included leather tanning and the production of belts and hoses. Contaminants at the property include chlorinated solvents and mineral oil in soil and groundwater, and metals (chrome and zinc) in shallow soils. Geosyntec's client acquired the facility in the 1960s and sold it in the 1990s. The current owner is assessing options for remediation associated with soil and groundwater contamination. Geosyntec is assisting our client with identifying appropriate response actions and cost allocations for contamination that may have occurred during the period that the client owned and operated the facility.
