Multimodal Facility Waterfront Bank Stabilization

2026-05-15T15:03:00-06:00March 19th, 2026|

In 2016, five areas of significant bank erosion were discovered near the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (MVRTA) operating facility. The erosion spanned approximately 500 linear feet of shoreline of the tidally influenced Merrimack River and damaged several stormwater outfalls, a retaining wall, and the foundations of two MVRTA buildings.

Dam Seismic Hazard and Embankment Response

This earth-rock dam, including embankment and powerhouse facilities, was constructed between 1923 and 1925. The dam impounds a 3,600-acre lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in a state in Northeast United States. For seepage control, the dam contains a thin-section concrete core wall beneath the upstream portion of the crest. The embankment, which has a maximum height of 86 feet and length of approximately 1,300 feet, was constructed using the semi-hydraulic fill method whereby earthen materials were dumped on either side of the core wall and then sluiced towards the core. The dam is State-regulated and is classified as a high-hazard structure.

Laberinto Solar Power Plant Investment Valuation

2026-03-17T13:49:32-06:00March 17th, 2026|

BRAVO Strategies II LLC (BRAVO), an investment vehicle managed by PIMCO, engaged Geosyntec to evaluate an investment proposition consisting of two adjacent photovoltaic (PV) electricity generating plants comprising 289 and 532 hectares. The project is located in the southern part of the Atacama Desert, near Antofagasta, Chile, which is some of the world’s prime solar real estate. The potential $315 million venture would involve a construction of a 146 MWp solar power plant for interconnection to the national electrical grid via the Grand North Interconnected System (SING), which accounts for roughly one quarter of the total Chilean power capacity.

Environmental and Management System Support, Multiple Locations in the United States

Arch Resources (Arch) is a leading U.S. producer of metallurgical products for the global steel industry, and the leading supplier of premium High-Vol A metallurgical coal globally. Arch and its subsidiaries operate four large, modern metallurgical mines that consistently set the industry standard for both mine safety and environmental stewardship. The flagship Leer mine consistently ranks among the lowest cost U.S. metallurgical mines and produces a product quality that is recognized and sought-after worldwide. Leer operations are complemented by the Leer South, Beckley and Mountain Laurel mines, which in aggregate provide Arch with a full suite of high-quality metallurgical products for sale into the global metallurgical market. Arch and its subsidiaries also operate highly efficient, low-cost thermal mines in the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming, and in Colorado. These mines produce highly cost-competitive thermal coal for sale into the domestic and international power generation markets.

Waterfront Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and Power Plant

Strategic Biofuels is building Louisiana Green Fuels (LGF), a carbon-negative waterfront facility in the Port of Columbia, Louisiana, that will produce low-carbon fuels and power. The Port of Columbia is highly supportive of LGF’s mission to produce sustainable aviation fuel and naphtha using forestry waste, mostly roundwood feedstock (logs and round sections of wood) from managed forests that is compliant with the federal renewable fuel standard.

Aemetis Riverbank Biofuels Facility Air and Greenhouse Gas Permitting Support

2026-04-02T15:58:10-06:00September 26th, 2025|

As part of the Riverbank Army Ammunition Plant Base Reuse Plan, the City of Riverbank wished to create a unique industrial park and awarded Aemetis the role of master developer for site redevelopment. In this role, Aemetis proposed to develop the “Carbon Zero 1” biofuels facility to produce renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel for the growing renewable fuels market, providing alternatives to fossil fuels throughout the central San Joaquin Valley region of California. The project would use processing technologies such as gasification to create a syngas, and through further refinements, renewable hydrogen for use in producing the desired low-carbon-intensity fuels.

Ammonia Facility and Subsea Hydrogen Pipeline Development

2026-04-02T16:31:16-06:00September 26th, 2025|

Gulf Coast Ammonia (GCA) is an agricultural and specialty chemical manufacturing facility that has been in development since 2017. With the addition of its new greenfield anhydrous ammonia production facility on the Texas Gulf Coast, which will produce approximately 1.3 million tons of ammonia per year from hydrogen, it will become one of the largest ammonia producers. Air Products, GCA’s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company and operator, is responsible for the development of the subsea hydrogen feedstock pipeline and the diffuser pipeline into the bay.

e-Fuels Feasibility Study

2026-04-02T16:31:15-06:00September 26th, 2025|

TES (Tree Energy Solutions) commissioned Geosyntec to provide front-end environmental studies and permitting and siting services during the conceptual and planning stages of design for two potential electric natural gas (e-NG) facilities in Texas. Design addressed phased production with a 250-megawatt electrolyzer, then use of a 500-megawatt electrolyzer to produce e-NG for European and Asian markets.

Lake Tahoe Pollutant Load Reduction Model

2026-04-07T08:48:49-06:00November 22nd, 2024|

The California Regional Water Quality Control Board (Water Board) has designated Lake Tahoe as an Outstanding National Resource Water under the US Federal Clean Water Act. Lake Tahoe has been losing its famed clarity since the late 1960s, and the Water Board and Nevada Division of Environmental Protection jointly created a phased Lake Tahoe total maximum daily load (TMDL) to address pollutants of concern. As part of the Phase II TMDL, public and private proponents of redevelopment projects needed to design strategies to control loads of nutrients and fine particulates from urbanized regions of the Tahoe Basin. They also needed to evaluate the performance of these strategies. The tool developed to meet this need is the Pollutant Load Reduction Model (PLRM). The first version was released in 2009, and the second version was released in 2015.

Port of Los Angeles Web Data Tools

The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) occupies 7,500 acres of land and water with 43 miles of waterfront. Over the last two decades, as part of their harbor toxics total maximum daily load (TMDL) strategic and compliance monitoring programs, POLA has collected a large volume of environmental data, including sediment, stormwater, surface-water, and tissue-chemistry data. However, these data were not easily accessible or usable to POLA staff. The older data were stored in an obsolete database and more recent data were stored as discrete, electronic data deliverables. To address this, an interactive webmap was developed to allow easy access to data and enable custom query filters.
