Understanding how water interacts with the surface and subsurface environment at any contaminated location is critical to designing innovative and cost-effective remediation systems and site-management strategies. By delineating and understanding the geology and hydrogeology affecting contaminated sites, our experts design strong conceptual site models and groundwater-remediation programs. Ultimately, hydrogeological characterization and modeling affects the performance of any remediation technologies deployed as a solution.

The operation of expensive remediation systems, sometimes for decades, is often the result of heterogenous or fine-grained geology, fractured bedrock, restrictive criteria that are regulated down to the part per trillion level, and contaminant mass that is caught up in fine-grain soil making painfully-slow diffusion the primary mass transfer mechanism. Our practitioners are adept at expediting investigations and accelerating site closure through a wide range of innovative technology applications. At many sites with languishing remedial systems, optimization is an option that may improve mass recovery, but it may not be the ideal solution, if contaminant source zones have been inadequately characterized. Geosyntec has repeatedly demonstrated that high-resolution characterization of these zones, followed by targeted source zone removal, can optimize remedy performance and lead to the safe closure of the system. Geosyntec is frequently called upon to critically evaluate and optimize existing systems, providing solutions that range from modification to the unit operations of an ex situ treatment train to reduce chemical and energy costs as influent concentrations decrease; or incorporating flexibility into injection systems by alternating passive and active flow fields or adding additional wells in targeted source zones. When performing remedial design of a new system, Geosyntec applies these same principles of future optimization at the forefront of the design process, positioning the client for long-term savings opportunities. System optimization includes a critical evaluation of the performance monitoring plan. At large sites with sprawling networks of monitoring wells, often sampled quarterly or more, Geosyntec has successfully utilized statistical models to develop streamlined monitoring networks that effectively monitor the system, are defensible to the regulatory community, and can save clients significant monitoring costs. Decades of experience in the implementation of new, emerging, and conventional technology allows our practitioners to frequently bridge the gap between the development and "first-to-field" stages of environmental solutions. In addition, Geosyntec's in-house laboratories provide physical and chemical testing that effectively monitors the performance of treatment processes, technologies, and systems. Our technical evaluation facilities regularly conduct chemical oxidation and bioreactor tests; examine the presence of organics and inorganics in wastewater; evaluate the effectiveness of remediation products; simulate the performance of conceptual designs; and analyze the likely behavior and end point of various treatment processes. Our lab teams communicate regularly to share knowledge and direct internal and external client projects to the most appropriate technology solutions. Working together, Geosyntec's engineers, scientists, and innovators leverage the power of chemical, physical, geological, and biological processes and reactions to detoxify, immobilize, and eliminate exposure risks to a wide range of chemicals in the environment, especially those difficult to treat by more conventional means. Geosyntec uses a combination of standard and developing technologies to create solutions at burdensome sites. These solutions often displace systems that have been running for many years and for which closure may have seemed impossible.

Risk Assessment of Potential Subsurface Vapor Intrusion Adjacent to a Manufacturing Plant in the United Kingdom

A former chemical manufacturing plant in the United Kingdom was scheduled for closure in the mid-1990s, and a team of environmental managers established a program for identifying and mitigating any potentially unacceptable risks to human health and the environment associated with the facility's 160 years of operation. During an initial screening of potential exposure pathways, subsurface vapor intrusion was identified as a possible concern. Residential properties are present in very close proximity to two former sandstone quarries that had been filled with waste materials and lime slurry from former chlorinated solvent production processes.

Comprehensive Remediation Strategy to Address Soil and Groundwater Contamination at an NPL Site

The 388-acre Hanlin-Allied-Olin NPL site is a former chemical manufacturing complex near Moundsville, West Virginia. The southern portion of the facility produced chloromethane products and used the chlor-alkali (mercury cell) process to manufacture chlorine and sodium hydroxide. The northern portion of the facility produced numerous semi-volatile intermediates for the manufacture of plastics and other synthetic materials. The long-term objective for the site entailed cost avoidance through the proactive development of two significant remedial components: (i) a major removal action using on-site disposal, and (ii) control of chlorinated solvents in an aquifer used downgradient of the site for a municipal water supply. Both objectives related to a third objective of minimizing the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) scope, thereby reducing long-term cost uncertainty.

Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study at the Berry’s Creek Superfund Site, Bergen County, New Jersey

The Berry's Creek Study Area (BCSA) is a sediment "Mega Site" located in Bergen County, New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from New York City. It is an urban mix of industrial, commercial and residential properties. Berry's Creek itself is a tidal tributary of the Hackensack River, and its watershed encompasses approximately 12 square miles of marshes. The watershed has been found to contain elevated levels of contaminants of potential concern (COPCs) that have migrated to the watershed from various point and non-point sources. A group of potentially responsible parties (BCSA Cooperating PRP Group, or Group) has formed to conduct an RI/FS at the site. In 2007, the Group selected Geosyntec to lead a team to develop and implement the three-phased RI/FS. Ultimately, the results of the RI/FS will be used by U.S. EPA to prepare a Record of Decision.

Site Characterization and Removal Response Action at a Coal Tar Site on the Hudson River, Edgewater, New Jersey

The Quanta Resources Site is located in a former industrialized parcel directly across the Hudson River from Manhattan. The site was used for coal tar storage from the 1930s until 1974, followed by the reprocessing of waste oil. The site previously contained over 60 aboveground storage tanks and 10 underground storage tanks having a total storage capacity of more than nine million gallons. During the years of plant operations, coal tar was off-loaded from barges docked at the site. The upland areas as well as the river sediment adjacent to the site contain a variety of contaminants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), arsenic, chromium, and lead. A plume of coal tar creosote exists beneath the site that extends into the Hudson River creating an oil sheen on the river adjacent to the site. The site was added to the National Priorities (Superfund) List in September 2002. Honeywell International retained Geosyntec to perform site investigation, a feasibility study, and remedial design services to control the oil sheen and to meet the overall requirements of U.S. EPA Region 2.
