Project Specifics

Geosyntec was engaged by a global mining client to review and improve the operation and maintenance program for the eight diesel engines that generate power for the remote mining site in Northern Alaska. The expansive open-pit mine is powered by eight generators able to provide up to 40 megawatts of electric power for mining equipment, mill operations, worker accommodations, wastewater treatment, and other uses. The diesel engines are equipped with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emissions control system that uses urea-injection to control emissions of nitrogen oxides. Following a series of permit violations due to excess nitrogen oxide emissions, Geosyntec was engaged to review and improve the process controls, standard operating procedures, and associated employee training program.

Geosyntec Scope of Services

Geosyntec has provided annual technical training to the engine operators for the past two years on best practices for operating the diesel engines and SCR nitrogen oxide control system. This training includes basic combustion principles, guidelines for maintaining optimal engine performance, an overview of airborne emissions formation and toxicity, and emissions control strategies. In addition, it describes urea batching and quality assurance/quality control procedures, provides a background on regulatory issues, and reviews and discusses Title V air permit requirements. The program trains attendees on mechanical troubleshooting techniques, required weekly emissions testing procedures, data management, and compliance recordkeeping.

On behalf of the client, we also developed diagnostic tools to evaluate Powerhouse operator competency after employees complete this annual training. This evaluation includes a comprehensive written examination and hands-on skills assessment.

Notable Accomplishments

Since Geosyntec was engaged to support the mine’s engine operations and emissions controls, air pollutant emissions have decreased, and the mine has not since exceeded its nitrous oxide air permit limits. After a successful first year of employee instruction, Geosyntec was invited to return to the mine and provide annual refresher training to all Powerhouse engine operators. In addition to covering the comprehensive core material presented during the initial year of training, the annual refresher addresses updates and changes to equipment, procedures, processes, troubleshooting techniques, and regulatory requirements. These sessions give special attention to employees attending the course for the first time.
