Practice Specifics

Our experts follow the latest research and regulatory developments in the field of microplastics and have contributed to the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council’s (ITRC) microplastics guidance document. Our staff are also collaborating with Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP) and other field experts to update the first of its kind open-source database for microplastics toxicity data, the Toxicity of Microplastics Explorer (ToMEx).

What Are Microplastics?

Microplastics are plastic particles 5 millimeters or smaller in diameter and can be found in the environment, food and water, and humans and animals.

These particles are released from a variety of sources, can be different sizes, shapes, and polymer types, and can contain chemical additives. They include microfibers from synthetic clothing and textiles, plastic pellets used in manufacturing (nurdles), tire-wear particles, and breakdown products of larger plastic items. Their diverse characteristics create major challenges when assessing fate, transport, and toxicity.

Markets Impacted by Microplastics

Because microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment and generated from so many sources, they impact many markets, including petrochemical manufacturing; product manufacturing; and food, beverage and product packaging. Key markets also include water supply, wastewater, industrial water, and agriculture.
