Rishab Mahajan to Present at MWRD Monitoring and Research Seminar Series
Rishab Mahajan, PE, CFM (Illinois), will present at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) Monitoring and Research Seminar Series at the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant in Cicero, Illinois. He will present the “Phosphorus Assessment and Reduction Plan Study for the Chicago Area Waterway System” on August 23, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. CDT.
Rishab is a Senior Water Resources Engineer with more than 15 years of experience focusing on finding affordable solutions to meet clients’ regulatory obligations using numerical modeling and data analyses. He has worked on and led detailed studies to support floodplain permitting, stormwater management designs, Clean Water Act compliance, dam-safety permits and designs, and Total Maximum Daily Load calculations.
The MWRD treats wastewater and manages stormwater in Cook County, Illinois. They engage with the public on several critical water-related issues. The MWRD’s community engagement efforts include providing educational publications at community events and academic presentations, guiding tour groups through their facilities, and sharing knowledge in clean water advancements through their monthly seminar series.
Abstract
The Chicago Area Waterway System (CAWS) consists of 80 miles of urban waterway channels, 25 percent of which are human made. The inflows into CAWS include treated effluent from O’Brien, Stickney, Calumet, and Lemont Water Reclamation Plants, combined sewer overflows, industrial discharges, and stormwater runoff. The MWRD developed a Phosphorus Assessment Reduction Plan for the CAWS as part of a negotiated settlement agreement for the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems for three water reclamation plants. The objective of this plan was to determine whether there is unnatural plant or algal growth in the CAWS due to excess phosphorus and, if so, to establish an implementation plan and schedule for measures to reduce unnatural growth. This presentation will provide an overview of how the Phosphorus Assessment Reduction Plan was developed and share recommendations to reduce unnatural growth.
