Kirk Craig to Moderate PFAS Discussion and Matthew Williams to Present on In Situ Biological Remediation at 2023 EPAZ Conference
Kirk Craig, PE, PEE, and Matthew Williams (Arizona) will speak at the 18th Annual Environmental Professionals of Arizona (EPAZ) Conference at the SRP Pera Club Conference Center in Tempe, Arizona.
Kirk will moderate the PFAS Panel Discussion at 12:00 a.m. MST on March 1, 2023. Matthew will present “In Situ Biological Remediation of Chromium, Nitrate and Chlorinated VOCs Using an Innovative EDS” at 11:15 p.m. MST on March 1, 2023. Matthew’s co-presenter is Hazel Cox of the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.
In addition, Geosyntec is one of two sponsors for the reception on February 28, 2023, at 5:20 p.m. MST at the Conference Center.
Kirk is a Senior Principal Environmental Engineer with more than 25 years of experience focused on the characterization and remediation of impacted soil, soil gas, surface water and groundwater at complex industrial and commercial properties.
Matthew is a Staff Professional who has implemented and managed a variety of subsurface investigations and remediation projects in Michigan, Minnesota, Ethiopia, and Arizona. He also works with numerous different sampling techniques for soil, soil vapor, and groundwater.
The EPAZ Conference involves discussions on the latest regulatory updates related to air, soil, water, and waste. Topics will include regulatory and technical updates for industry, municipalities, and medical facilities.
EPAZ, formerly known as the HazWaste Society, was formed in 1986 to address the study, evaluation, and control of hazardous wastes generated in Arizona. EPAZ sponsors conferences and trade shows to increase public awareness and understanding of the problems related to hazardous materials and waste management. Proceeds from their events benefit a scholarship fund that has awarded over 125 thousand dollars to Arizona students interested in joining the industry.
About the Panel Discussion:
Kirk Craig, PE, PEE, Senior Principal Environmental Engineer at Geosyntec Consultants, will facilitate a discussion on the historical, current, and ever-changing state of federal PFAS regulations and on pending private litigation cases. Attendees will learn about a number of cutting-edge treatments, destruction methods, and passive sampling technologies under development. Waste management considerations related to PFAS will also be discussed.
About the Presentation:
Matthew Williams and Hazel Cox will discuss a remedial strategy for impacted groundwater containing chromium, nitrate, and tetrachloroethylene. They will address how they developed the remedial concept and pilot tested a supplied electron-donor biostimulation. This approach used a continuous substrate addition system (CSAS) to introduce both fast-acting and long-lasting food-grade electron donors to rapidly drop redox conditions within groundwater and maintain these conditions for several months after injection.
