Geosyntec to Present on Water Quality at the Kansas Governor’s Water Conference

Priya Iyengar, PE, Maria Vishnevskiy, PE, (Kansas), and Matt Bardol, PE, CFM, CPESC, DWRE, (Illinois) will speak at the Governor’s Water Conference at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manhattan, Kansas, on November 15 and 16, 2023.

Priya and Matt will present “An Assessment of Lake Springfield Dam and Lake Water Quality” on Thursday, November 16 at 8:00 a.m. EST. Maria will present “Approaches to Groundwater and Fate and Transport Modeling to Incorporate Climate Change and Basin Management” on Thursday, November 16 at 11:00 a.m. EST.

Matt is a Senior Principal Engineer with more than 27 years of diverse environmental and water resource engineering experience. He offers clients a breadth of technical expertise to address complex water resource situations with innovative solutions.

Maria is a Senior Engineer with more than 10 years of experience focusing on flow and transport modeling, engineering design for remediation, and site investigation and characterization. Maria is skilled at managing large- and small-scale projects and coordinating geographically distributed teams to deliver effective projects.

The Governor’s Water Conference addresses policy and research developments, highlighting water issues in Kansas and the updated Kansas Water Plan. Attendees will include state and congressional legislators, state and federal officials, organizations, and citizens with an interest in the state’s water resources.

Abstracts

Title: An Assessment of Lake Springfield Dam and Lake Water Quality
Presenter: Priya Iyengar and Matt Bardol
Date/Time: Thursday, November 16, 2023 at 8:00 a.m. EST

The Lake Springfield Dam in Springfield, Missouri, was constructed in the 1950s to supply cooling water to the James River Power Plant, which closed in 2021. It is now used for recreational purposes such as boating and fishing. Aquatic vegetation dominates many parts of the lake where sediment input from the upstream James River has been deposited over the years. Upstream of the lake, the James River is impaired for whole-body contact (A) recreation. The City of Springfield is developing the Lake Springfield Plan in a phased approach to enhance the area into a recreational focal point for the region, spur economic development around the lake, and improve water quality. As part of the Economic Development Administration Grant, the initial phase of the Lake Springfield Plan development consists of watershed and hydrology assessment, water quality sampling and assessment, and lake bathymetry and sediment profiling. This session will focus on baseline results from the initial hydrology study that includes climate change impacts, watershed land-use changes, current and future sediment loading, and potential dam modification alternatives.

Title: Approaches to Groundwater and Fate and Transport Modeling to Incorporate Climate Change and Basin Management
Presenter: Maria Vishnevskiy
Date/Time: Thursday, November 16, 2023 at 11 a.m. EST

Groundwater conditions are becoming increasingly unpredictable in drought-stricken areas such as the Midwest. This session will present potential strategies for developing a three-dimensional groundwater flow and transport model to support the evaluation of groundwater flow and contaminant plume migration under current and future conditions, including incorporation of available regional data to simulate the effects of climate change (change in precipitation/evapotranspiration patterns affecting groundwater recharge) as well as groundwater management (change in pumping and artificial recharge) when developing a future predictive cycle that would be representative of anticipated future conditions. The presentation will also highlight the importance of understanding regional groundwater conditions and will address research and tools to identify and incorporate other available datasets.
