Chris Adkison (California) will present during the Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage session. The presentation, coauthored by Eryn Torres (California), will address surface and near-surface monitoring tools used at carbon capture and sequestration projects and will delve into how their use satisfies California Air Resources Board requirements. The talk will explore how these tools can be used to tentatively identify CO2 leakage and will address the unique advantages and disadvantages of each tool, including field requirements, data management challenges, and computational constraints.
Chris and Eryn will also exhibit at booth #D41 where they will connect with attendees about global energy transition. Geosyntec’s Anica Haynes (Louisiana), Eric Kovich, PE (Florida), and Bob Sirianni, PG (Texas), will also be available to talk with attendees at our booth.
Chris is an Environmental Scientist who focuses on ecosystem science and management, environmental statistics, and water quality monitoring and assessment.
Eryn is a Principal Geologist with 10 years of experience providing strategic, technical, and project management support for a variety of clients and projects, with a focus on subsurface analysis.
Anica is a Senior Principal Environmental Permitting and Planning Practice Lead with more than 20 years of experience focused on technical and project management, primarily in the chemical, energy, industrial, and manufacturing sectors.
Eric is a Senior Principal Engineer with more than 20 years of experience focused on health, safety, security, and environment regulatory compliance; contaminated site assessment and remediation; environmental planning and permitting; and mergers and acquisitions.
Bob is a Senior Geologist with expertise in three-dimensional subsurface modeling and data analysis who transitioned from a career in oil and gas to serve as a consultant. As assistant project manager, he recently supported subsurface permitting for a confidential CCUS project.
For 20 years, the Americas Energy Summit has served the global energy community in the Americas. Focusing on the latest industry concepts and how to navigate current challenges, this year’s event will bring together gas, LNG, and hydrogen companies that are driving ambitions to a low-carbon energy future. Topics will include net zero emissions, the growing importance of hydrogen, CCS/CCUS, and other technological advances.

Presentation Title: Surface & Near-Surface Monitoring for CCUS: How Advanced Techniques in Ecology and Agriculture Made Their Way into CARB’s CCS Protocol
Date/Time: 4:30 p.m. CST on January 18, 2023
Speaker: Chris Adkison
Coauthor: Eryn Torres
While many of the monitoring tools, instruments, and techniques discussed in the CCS Protocol are considered standard practice, or at least common in the oil and gas industry, tools such as eddy covariance, soil flux chambers, and remote sensing identified by CARB for utilization in surface and near-surface monitoring are less known. This presentation will focus on the historical development of niche surface and near-surface monitoring tools such as eddy covariance, soil flux chambers, and remote sensing and provide utility for CCS projects to satisfy CARB requirements.
