Jessica Yeager, PE, LSP (Kansas), will moderate six sessions at the Air and Waste Management Association’s (A&WMA’s) Annual Environmental Technical Conference for the Midwest States, at the Lenexa Conference Center in Lenexa, Kansas, May 2, 2023. Maria Vishnevskiy, PE, and Priya Iyengar, PE (Kansas), will both present at the conference.

Maria Vishnevskiy will present “PFAS: Legal Update and Environmental Forensics” and Priya Iyengar will present “Understanding the Macro Problem that is Microplastics. In addition, Michael Jury, PG (Kansas), will attend the conference.

Jessica is a Principal Environmental Engineer with over 13 years of experience focused on strategic, risk-based closures and complex remedial design for legacy and brownfield redevelopment sites. Jessica is also a Licensed Site Professional (LSP) in Massachusetts, allowing her to render site clean-up decisions under the Massachusetts Contingency Plan.

Maria is a Senior Engineer who focuses on flow and transport modeling, engineering design for remediation, and site investigation and characterization. Maria is skilled at managing large- and small-scale projects and coordinating geographically distributed teams deliver effective projects.

Priya is a Project Engineer with over 11 years of professional experience. She brings a broad public sector perspective in green-infrastructure-program planning and implementation and has design experience in stream restoration, geomorphology, engineered open channels, and water quality BMPs.

Michael is a Geologist based in Kansas who plans, leads, and conducts field work related to site investigations, remediation, and operation and maintenance of remediation systems on Superfund and other sites.

The A&WMA Midwest Section is a regional organization of the Air & Waste Management Association, a nonprofit technical, scientific, and educational organization. The Section serves over five hundred members in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska and includes environmental lawyers, engineers, consultants, academic members, agency staff, and industry environmental health and safety personnel. The Section’s one-day conference will feature technical presentations, agency roundtables, and networking opportunities for environmental professionals in the Kansas City region.

Abstracts
PFAS: Legal Update and Environmental Forensics

In March 2023, USEPA announced its proposal for a National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) for six PFAS, including maximum contaminant level goals and maximum contaminant levels. In addition, there are several other proposed federal rules that would change how PFAS use, treatment, and disposal is regulated. This presentation will provide a legal update on current and upcoming PFAS regulations. Then will discuss how environmental forensics can be used to delineate liability for a potential PFAS source by estimating contributions from that source, identifying a potential alternative source, differentiating between source releases and background concentrations, and establishing a release timeframe.

Understanding the Macro Problem that is Microplastics
Microplastics in the environment come from a variety of sources and may be the next big contaminant of concern. Research is being conducted on microplastic sources, fate, and transport in the environment to better understand the effects on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and human health. This presentation will explore the current state of knowledge of microplastics research, the data gaps that still need to be addressed, and the challenges in developing a regulatory framework.
