Geosyntec Presents at the Northwest’s Largest Drinking Water Conference

Geosyntec staff will present at the 2023 PNWS-AWWA Conference in Kennewick, Washington, on May 4 and 5, 2023. Geosyntec’s speakers include Jacob Krall, PhD, PE (Portland), Jamie Feldman (Portland), Austin Orr, PE (Portland), and Joanna Lewis (Portland).

The annual event, hosted by the Pacific Northwest section of the American Water Works Association, is the region’s largest conference and trade show for drinking water professionals. Attendees will learn about the latest in source water and drinking water protection with case studies on projects with the Clackamas River Water Providers, Willamette Intake Facilities Commission, Joint Water Commission, and Clean Water Services.

Presentations

Thursday, May 4, 10:15 a.m. PDT

Pollutant Load Modeling Webtool for Source Water Protection (Jamie Feldman)

The presentation will cover Geosyntec and Clackamas River Water Providers’ development of a web-based pollutant load model that supports the protection of drinking water source quality in the Clackamas River. The tool enables users to generate best management practice (BMP) scenarios to assess the potential of specific BMPs in reducing pollutant loading from diverse land uses. Jamie will demonstrate the tool, explain the model inputs and algorithm, and clarify how it can be used to facilitate BMP implementation in the Clackamas River watershed.

Friday, May 5, 8:45 a.m. PDT

Development of a Watershed Protection, Monitoring, and Outreach Plan for the Willamette Intake Facilities Commission (Jacob Krall)

The presentation will discuss Geosyntec and the Willamette Intake Facilities Commission’s effort to identify water quality risks and opportunities for source water protection partnerships, projects, and initiatives. Jacob will describe the history and current water quality status of the Willamette Basin, the effects of the Willamette Valley Project Reservoirs on basin-wide water temperatures and water quality, and future analyses to protect the Willamette River as a water supply source.

Friday, May 5, 10:00 a.m. PDT
Source Water Protection Planning in an Agricultural Watershed (Joanna Lewis)

The presentation will discuss how Geosyntec and Clackamas River Water Providers developed a Source Water Assessment Plan (SWAP) to protect the Clackamas River as a drinking water source for its 300,000 customers. Joanna will provide an overview of the SWAP development and highlight the contaminant source and risk assessment, with emphasis on agricultural sources of pesticides and nutrients.

Friday, May 5, 11:00 a.m. PDT
Tualatin River Drinking Water Source Area Impoundment Identification and Prioritization (Austin Orr)

The presentation will discuss how Geosyntec, Joint Water Commission, and Tualatin River Watershed Council identified impoundments and risk factors contributing to cyanobacteria blooms in a Drinking Water Source Area serving 450,000 customers in Washington County, Oregon. The presentation will cover key findings and next steps.

Friday, May 5, 11:30 a.m. PDT
Upper Tualatin Wildfire Protection Plan (Jacob Krall)

This presentation will cover the development of a wildfire protection plan by Geosyntec on behalf of the Joint Water Commission and Clean Water Services. Along with Jessica Dorsey of the JWC, Jacob will discuss water quality impacts associated with wildfires, analyses of the vulnerability due to wildfire of important resources and assets, and actions that can be taken before, during, and after a wildfire event to mitigate the impacts. The talk will also touch on lessons learned from discussions with utilities affected by the 2020 wildfire season.
