Geosyntec Practitioners Coauthored a White Paper on Freshwater Mussel Surveys
Courtney Abshire and Scott Walker (Texas) and Toni Taylor and Cody Luebbering (Missouri) coauthored the white paper “Unlocking Insights: Geosyntec’s Expertise Shines in Freshwater Mussel Surveys Across the Eastern United States.”
Courtney is a Project Ecologist with more than 10 years of biological survey and permitting experience including planning, implementing and supporting environmental evaluations for aquatic impacts. He regularly performs aquatic habitat and species-specific surveys for state and federal listed species, wetland delineations, biological monitoring, environmental permitting, and regulatory support.
Scott is a Senior Principal Ecologist with more than 20 years of experience in project management, environmental impact assessment, ecological restoration, and environmental permitting and planning.
Toni is a Project Ecologist with a diverse background in terrestrial ecology, permitting, and compliance. She often supports midstream oil and gas, landfill, mining, and alternative energy initiatives.
Cody is a Senior Scientist with more than 15 years of water quality and Natural Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting experience. Expert in water quality monitoring and sampling, aquatic biological sampling, Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) testing, and natural resource management, he supports environmental and remedial investigations and conducts research into biology and natural resource management.
About the White Paper
Freshwater mussel surveys can be complicated to perform for many reasons. A project might require a freshwater mussel survey if it will occur in a relatively permanent waterway and involves state or federal agency permitting. These projects include hydropower, dam removal, dredging, spill response, inland port development, shoreline development or protection, linear stream crossing projects, and bridge projects.
Geosyntec scientists frequently perform freshwater mussel surveys throughout the Midwest and eastern United States. Methods we use to conduct these surveys vary depending on the type of project, the project footprint and potential downstream impacts, potential or known state or federally listed species in the area, and site-specific conditions of the waterbody.
