Geosyntec Launches Newsletter on Microplastics

Geosyntec is launching a quarterly newsletter as a tool to provide timely and relevant updates on the growing topic of microplastics in the environment with the objective of presenting readers with a quick overview of key policies, research, and latest news.

Our practitioners in the field of microplastics will be drawing on their ongoing project-specific and real-world experience, the latest international, U.S. Federal, and State regulatory developments, and the cutting-edge findings from the global scientific community, to develop a pragmatic resource for organizations with potential responsibilities associated with the investigation and management of microplastics.

Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment due to the widespread use of plastics. They are defined as plastic fragments that are between 1 nanometer and 5 millimeters in length and can come from a variety of sources including microbeads from cosmetics, microfibers from clothing and textiles, plastic pellets (nurdles) in manufacturing processes, and breakdown of larger plastic items. Microplastics have been detected in marine and freshwater systems, wastewater, drinking water, food (dairy, honey, beer, seafood), and air. Current research is being conducted to understand what drives toxicity associated with microplastics, which may be related to the polymer type, chemical additives, size, shape, color, and ability to absorb chemicals from the environment.
