Public Health Risk Assessment in Support of Use Attainability Analysis in Chicago Waterways

The Chicago Waterways System (CWS) offers an array of recreational opportunities for the community. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), in compliance with the Clean Water Act, is currently conducting a Use Attainability Analysis (UAA) on the CWS. One aspect of the UAA is to determine whether bacterial water quality standards for some or all of the CWS are necessary to protect the proposed designated uses of the CWS. In order to assist IEPA in making its determination, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District) selected Geosyntec to conduct a risk assessment of the human health impacts of instituting effluent disinfection at its three largest water reclamation plants (WRP), which include the Stickney WRP, the North Side WRP, and the Calumet WRP, all of which discharge into the CWS.

Geotechnical Design for Building Construction near Subway Tunnel and Other Subsurface Infrastructure

The new Ogden Elementary School is being constructed on the site of an existing elementary school by contractors for the Public Building Commission of Chicago (PBC) near downtown. Geosyntec was retained by the PBC to assist with the design of groundwater control measures and the earth retention structure (ERS) during the site preparation phase of work. Shallow groundwater and silty soil, which make dewatering efforts difficult, were documented as typical of the site. The scheduled opening of the new school was viewed by the client as a firm deadline that would not allow for any significant delay, so any necessary geotechnical design and construction had non-negotiable deadlines associated with them.

Vegetated Roof Assessment Using Satellite Imagery for City of Chicago

The City of Chicago has been a leader in implementing green practices in an urban environment and encouraging both the public and private sector to apply such practices through the development of various City programs and policies. An example of this leadership is the implementation of the City's Department of Housing and Economic Development's (DHED) Sustainable Development Policy which requires buildings that receive financial assistance or are part of a planned development to install a vegetated roof. DHED retained Geosyntec to assist the Department, through the use of satellite imagery, in identifying the number, size and relative health of the vegetated roofs within the City of Chicago boundary and to link the identified roofs back to specific City programs and policies, where known.
