Abstract: “Operating on the Margins: Making Sense of Marginal Electricity Emission Factors”
Electricity consumption from the grid often represents a significant share of life cycle inventories and broader environmental assessments, making the selection of electricity emission factors an important methodological choice. Attributional assessments typically rely on average electricity emission factors that reflect the average emissions intensity of the existing generation mix. In contrast, consequential assessments often apply marginal emission factors to estimate the emission changes associated with changes in electricity demand.
Multiple formulations of marginal emission factors exist, each reflecting different temporal and structural aspects of electricity grid response. This presentation provides a conceptual overview of three types of marginal emission factors: operating margin emission factors, which capture short-run dispatch responses of existing generation assets; build margin emission factors, which reflect longer-term capacity expansion decisions; and combined margin emission factors, which integrate both short-run and long-run system dynamics.
