Project Specifics

The Gowanus Canal Superfund Site is undergoing extensive remediation that is expected to take 10 years. Remediation includes dredging, in situ stabilization (ISS), capping, bulkhead replacement, and more.

Geosyntec Scope of Services

Geosyntec is providing construction quality assurance (CQA) oversight. We created a construction information management system (CIMS) to collect, process, organize, report, and visualize relevant construction on the site. The CIMS includes modules for tracking dredging progress, ISS status, capping progress, and bulkhead replacement. Custom digital field forms and web-based digital tools allow Geosyntec staff to efficiently record construction details, and automated reporting saves costs. Geosyntec worked with contractors, geotechnical laboratories, instrumentation vendors, water-treatment operators, and other project stakeholders to develop a comprehensive system to help collect, manage, and report data and achieve project objectives.

Notable Accomplishments

Geosyntec designed, built, and deployed the CIMS to help achieve a net reduction in CQA staff hours while reducing risks to the project’s budget and schedule. Data-collection workflows follow data-management best practices while automating routine tasks including daily, weekly, and monthly reporting. Custom-built mobile and web-based data-collection tools have allowed for powerful, yet efficient data collection and reporting workflows, and interactive dashboards and web mapping applications empower users to query and action data in real time.
