Geosyntec Contributes to the 2024 Georgia Environmental Conference

Geosyntec will contribute significantly to the 2024 Georgia Environmental Conference. The event will be held at the Jekyll Island Convention Center in Jekyll Island, Georgia, August 21 through 23, 2024.

Geosyntec speakers are Nicole Stuhr, PE; Jacques Smith, PhD; Mehmet Iscimen, PE, CPESC; Kip Gray, PhD; Ashley Ramsey, PG; and Kathleen Brannen-Donnelly, PhD, PG.

Visit the Geosyntec team at booth 106 and the SiREM, a Geosyntec Company, team at booth 104. Both Geosyntec and SiREM are conference sponsors.

Nicole is a Project Engineer based in Georgia focused on stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, and environmental compliance. She has extensive experience working with industrial-stormwater clients to achieve permit compliance.

Jacques is a Senior Scientist based in Tennessee who manages SiREM’s Knoxville laboratory. He is an expert in environmental laboratory testing, including next-generation sequencing, coal-combustion-residuals (CCR) waste reclamation, leaching studies, settling and dewatering, and wastewater-treatment processes.

Mehmet is a Senior Principal Engineer based in Georgia with more than 17 years of professional experience focused on the areas of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, solid waste disposal facility design, and construction oversight.

Kip is a Senior Environmental Engineer based in Georgia with more than 10 years of experience focused on flow-and-transport modeling and unsaturated-soil hydraulics and mechanics. He is experienced in the development of hydrogeological block models, flow modeling, and the design of dewatering and in situ treatment systems.

Ashley is a Project Geologist based in Georgia who focuses on environmental compliance, field geology and hydrogeology, site assessment and monitoring, and sediment sampling. She often navigates solid waste management on behalf of municipal, state, federal, and private-sector clients.

Kathleen is a Project Geologist based in Georgia who focuses on aqueous geochemistry, environmental statistics, and site characterization and who supports related environmental litigation.

The Georgia Environmental Conference is a large and comprehensive environmental education event held each year. The conference expects to welcome more than 750 attendees, including government officials, business and industry leaders, attorneys, engineers, landowners, architects, energy experts, water-planning-district employees, academics, public health officials, solid waste experts, and others with a strong interest in environmental activities in Georgia and the southeastern United States.

In lieu of conference giveaways, Geosyntec Consultants has contributed $1,500 to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on behalf of the Jekyll Island Foundation.

Geosyntec Participation

Title: Remediation at VOC Sites
Geosyntec Speaker and Co-chair: Jacques Smith (SiREM), co-chaired by Nicole Stuhr
Date and Time: Wednesday, August 21 at 4:30 p.m. EDT
SiREM, a Geosyntec Company, will present on their latest anaerobic DGG Plus BTEX-degrading cultures, focusing on benzene, toluene, and xylene degradation and the associated bacteria. The presentation will highlight the advantages of anaerobic degradation and showcase field studies where the cultures were injected to achieve successful removal following years of alternative remediation attempts.

Title: Robins AFB Case Study: Assessment, Remediation, and Beyond
Geosyntec Speaker: Kip Gray
Date and Time: 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 22
Complex partially characterized sites can often experience slow or stalled remediation progress. This presentation will review several advanced site characterization techniques and remedial strategies which have been recently implemented at Robins Air Force Base to accelerate site closure.

Title: Experiences with CCR Basin Evaluations
Geosyntec Speaker: Mehmet Iscimen
Date and Time: Thursday, August 22 at 2:00 p.m. EDT
The presentation will cover the successful closure of an ash pond site from beginning to end and will provide a programmatic overview of the permitting, design, and construction throughout a changing regulatory environment.

Title: On the Successful Application of Environmental Forensics to PFAS
Geosyntec Speakers: Nicole Stuhr (Co-chair) and Kathleen Brannen-Donnelly
Date and Time: 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 22
Site investigation and remediation at contaminated sites can be costly and daunting for federal or private entities that have been directed by regulators to address contamination. With the addition of two PFAS as hazardous substances and five PFAS MCLs, being able to distinguish PFAS in the environment from a regional background and distinguishing sources of PFAS in the environment will be on the forefront of site investigations for years to come. This panel discussion will share how a multiple-lines-of-evidence approach to environmental forensics can defensibly identify and distinguish PFAS parties. This panel session, given by an attorney and a consultant, will walk the audience through legal and technical facets of navigating multiparty PFAS sites.

Title: Desktop Waste Characterization: An Innovative Alternative
Geosyntec Speaker: Ashley Ramsey
Date and Time: 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 22
Waste characterization studies are often done as preliminary investigations to decide whether to implement new programs for waste diversion. The focus is often on which wastes can be captured by changes in outreach or collection, either in the interest of capturing waste as feedstock (e.g., for composting, anaerobic digestion, recycling) or to gauge whether implementation of a new program for waste diversion is warranted. Geosyntec has pioneered desktop waste characterization studies as an alternative to traditional field-intensive waste characterization studies. A desktop study is ideal at the planning/feasibility level as it can be completed rapidly at a much lower cost and with fewer health and safety hazards than field-based efforts.
