The winner of the 2024 competition is Diana Ramírez of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville for the paper, “An Unexpected PFAS Sink: PFAS Assimilation Into Bacterial Membranes.” Diana receives an all-expenses-paid trip to the Battelle 2024 Chlorinated Conference in Denver, Colorado, or a cash prize of $2,000 USD.
Congratulations, Diana!
The two second-place winners received a prize of $1,000 each. Rachel A. Molé of Carnegie Mellon University was chosen for the paper,“Groundwater solutes influence the adsorption of short-chain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAA) to colloidal activated carbon and impact performance for in situ groundwater remediation,” and Jessica LaFond of Texas Tech University was chosen for the paper, “Biotransformation of a polyfluoroalkyl substance by oxygenase expressing bacteria.”
Congratulations, Rachel and Jessica!
The three third-place winners received a prize of $500 each. Collin Ross Sutton of the University of Wisconsin, Madison was honored for the paper,“Novel approach to modeling flow and transport in fracture networks: a key to understanding the migration of contaminants in complex systems.” Ashley Lin of the University of Florida was honored for the paper,“Broadening Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance (PFAS) Assessment to Emerging Sources of Concern: Volatile PFAS in Landfill Gas.” Menglin Jiang of the University of Notre Dame was honored for the paper,“Low-Temperature Thermal Treatment of Portland Cement Concrete Contaminated with Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).”
