Geosyntec Authors a White Paper on PFAS Regulations and Treatments

Geosyntec practitioners published “New Directions in Leachate Management: Learn How PFAS Regulations and Treatments are Transforming the Industry” as a resource for landfill owners and operators. The paper explores the increase in regulations and the impacts of those changes. Lisa Andrews, PE, PMP, (Maine) was the lead author. Herwig Goldemund, PhD; Vanessa Maldonado, PhD; Brian Petty, PE; Mike Hayes, PE; and Tom Ramsey, PE, also contributed to the paper.

Lisa is a Senior Engineer with more than 24 years of experience focused on water and wastewater treatment. She is a versatile, client service-focused Project Management Professional (PMP) working at the intersection of the Clean Water Act and process engineering and design. Her experience includes a wide range of industrial water projects, including governmental, chemical manufacturing, mining, power, aquaculture, and ag/food processing.

About the White Paper

The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has been studying per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in landfill leachate since 2021. The agency found that over 95% of leachate discharges from over 200 landfills studied contained PFAS, with average concentrations as high as 14,000 parts per trillion. Because these landfills receive many kinds of waste that contain and generate PFAS, the substance is nearly ubiquitous in landfill leachate.

In this white paper, Geosyntec practitioners address many concerns facing landfill owners, including rapidly changing regulations from the USEPA and states, the complexity of the particular PFAS found in different kinds of landfills, and promising tools and innovations on the horizon. The paper goes on to suggest steps landfill owners and operators can take to better understand their responsibilities and address PFAS at their facilities.
