Constructed wetlands have shown great promise treating a variety of constituents in wastewater and groundwater impacted by ammonia, BOD, COD, iron, phosphorous, volatiles, and other contaminants. Geosyntec has significant experience in conducting a wide variety of wetlands-related projects. For example, Geosyntec has partnered in the design and implementation of innovative vertical-flow constructed wetlands systems and adapted this technology for the effective treatment of wastewater. The features of this technology include a small footprint, a modular design, and the system's operational stability throughout the year. Geosyntec has also designed constructed wetlands for treatment of stormwater runoff and in other applications of implementing best management practices (BMPs) for many years. We have further used innovative approaches involving constructed wetlands for treatment of metals and petroleum-related compounds, and we are involved in several treatability and pilot-scale studies to evaluate the use of constructed wetlands to treat a variety of contaminants in groundwater. Goals of these projects have included treatment, as well as to create and restore habitat for aquatic and terrestrial vegetation and wildlife, stabilize shorelines and prevent erosion and sedimentation, and improve water quality by attenuation of nutrient, pollutant, and sediment loads. Project goals have also included providing educational and recreational opportunities.

Wetland Delineation and Permitting

Geosyntec practitioners are leaders in the development and application of science-based methods and tools for wetland identification and delineation. By determining the existence, location boundaries, and physical size of a wetland area, we help clients establish whether water bodies within a project area meet criteria for regulation under specific local, state, and federal jurisdictions. In addition, we make recommendations as to the size or width of any buffers that may be needed to protect water quality or habitats. Our field investigations and surveys establish clearly marked wetland boundaries, comprehensive delineation maps with data collection points, and site-specific information such as soil survey results or species composition and dominance data. We also can assess whether created or replicated wetlands function effectively and then aid clients in the application of this information to future design plans. This can include an evaluation of pre-construction design criteria and monitoring protocols. Once a wetland delineation is complete, Geosyntec guides clients through the permitting application process as outlined in Section 401 or Section 404 of the Clean Water Act as well as the various state and regional laws governing water bodies throughout the United States.

Watershed & Water Quality Studies and Modeling

To help clients achieve stringent water quality goals, Geosyntec provides rigorous assessment and modeling services to assess the sources and factors that affect the delivery of critical pollutants across watersheds. Through our comprehensive studies and analyses, we provide technically defensible tools and approaches that can be used in the development of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) calculations and watershed protection plans. In addition, we frequently turn to Use Attainability Analyses to examine site-specific water quality criteria that affect attainability goals under natural, human-caused, and economic conditions. Our hydrodynamic and water-quality models integrate inputs from point and nonpoint sources to support our engineers and scientists as they study impacts on water quality in receiving water. These models allow us to understand the assimilative capacities of a given body of water, propose best management practices that can affect pollutant impacts, and predict the time required for a system to recover after being altered. Using watershed studies, water quality monitoring, and hydrological and hydrodynamic modeling, we also can assess compliance with local, state, and federal water quality standards. Using all this information, we are better able to evaluate the magnitude, frequency, and duration of impacts of a wide variety of pollutant sources. Our practitioners offer extensive experience with geographic information system applications for spatial analysis, planimetric and thematic mapping, and data representation. We employ watershed models including the Watershed Characterization System (WCS), Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources (BASINS), and the Watershed Assessment Model (WAMView). We also employ the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP), the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC), and the Stream Water Quality Model (QUAL2K) for hydrodynamic and water-quality models. Our practitioners are at the forefront of policy analyses, regulatory compliance, and technology applications that promote sustainable water resources management and ecosystem restoration. We have extensive experience helping local governments develop and negotiate long-term control plans for combined sewer overflows, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits, and consent orders. We also comment on Clean Water Act issues at the state and national level, including the development of new recreational use criteria for water bodies across the county and for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's new framework for integrated planning for wastewater and stormwater.

Whether it's due to customer, shareholder, or regulator-requirements, transitional workforce challenges, or some other reason, organizations are seeking to develop, implement, maintain, and improve upon their systems for environmental, safety and health, and sustainability management. Limited resources and management system expertise within the organizations can be a road block. Geosyntec's comprehensive understanding of our clients' operations paired with our expertise in management system development and implementation allow us to provide our clients with innovative and cost-effective solutions for identifying, prioritizing, and managing more efficiently the environmental, safety and health, and sustainability risks and opportunities associated with their operations. Our management system experts offer clients a broad array of services, including policy development support, system element gap analysis, document and training material development, performance monitoring data analysis, trending, and visualization, information management system design and optimization, system auditing, nonconformance correction planning including root cause analysis, and management review and third-party certification preparation. Our projects routinely involve organizations with multiple and varied facilities, multi-cultural stakeholders, and transient workforces. Through our work, Geosyntec's clients improve performance and achieve their operational goals. Geosyntec's management system implementation programs are tailored to meet the needs of each client resulting in a smooth integration and minimized operational disruption. Geosyntec's strategy for new management systems is to learn about existing processes and procedures and develop a simple manual that cross-references to other processes and programs within the organization. We then work with the organization to customize the system and procedures. A management system developed in partnership with Geosyntec is a good fit from the start and is flexible to evolve with the organization. For our clients with existing management systems, Geosyntec offers support with routine auditing and maintenance, system improvement, gap analysis with updated standards, developing and implementing corrective actions, and transitioning to new and/or revised standards. Our management system specialists include individuals with technical expertise across a broad range of disciplines who have studied and are training in management systems and who have worked in industry under management systems. We have experience with systems that conform to the ISO, OHSAS, RC, and EPA compliance-focused management system standards. The ISO 14001 standard for Environmental Management and the ISO 45001 standard for Occupational Safety and Health are widely used in manufacturing. Geosyntec is experienced in performing gap analyses of existing systems to determine what steps are needed to comply with these standards. We also perform internal audits, develop site-specific lists of legal requirements, develop standard operating procedures, and assist with corrective and preventative actions to improve management systems.
