Alan Fowler is a Senior Principal based in Massachusetts with more than 25 years of experience focused on the assessment and remediation of contaminated sediment. Alan is a recognized expert in the field of contaminated sediment management and is responsible for developing the technical and regulatory strategies for high-liability sediment sites.
Geosyntec professionals will deliver four technical presentations and three poster presentations during the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) North America 38th Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 12-16, 2017.
Lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and marine environments, especially those in urban waterfront and coastal areas, often have contaminated sediment and surface water and stressed biota from decades of industrial and commercial activities. Sediment contamination can include metals, crude oil and refined petroleum compounds, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Because contaminated sediment sites present complex challenges, site evaluation and cleanup are expensive and can take several years to implement, and the metrics for remedy effectiveness are not often well defined.
Soil erosion and resulting sedimentation can cause widespread damage to waterways and impact drinking-water quality, endanger wildlife resources, and hinder the flood-control capacity of lakes and reservoirs. For the most challenging projects and construction programs, Geosyntec has extensive experience developing effective stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPPs), erosion and sediment (E&S) control and revegetation plans, hydrologic and hydraulic models, and designs for stormwater best management practices (BMPs).
