Project Specifics

The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) occupies 7,500 acres of land and water with 43 miles of waterfront. Over the last two decades, as part of their harbor toxics total maximum daily load (TMDL) strategic and compliance monitoring programs, POLA has collected a large volume of environmental data, including sediment, stormwater, surface-water, and tissue-chemistry data. However, these data were not easily accessible or usable to POLA staff. The older data were stored in an obsolete database and more recent data were stored as discrete, electronic data deliverables. To address this, an interactive webmap was developed to allow easy access to data and enable custom query filters.

Geosyntec Scope of Services

Geosyntec designed and developed a comprehensive web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) tool that enables POLA scientists and project managers to visualize and analyze biological and environmental data and geographic features in a common geospatial context. This secure webmap was built using GIS technology and allows staff to upload laboratory, field, and survey data; view data in a variety of spatial, graphical, and tabular formats in planimetric and profile views; query data for analysis and export; and produce high-quality maps and visualizations for reporting.

Notable Accomplishments

The webmap provides a secure, easy-to-use, and customizable means for POLA, their subcontractors, and other parties to quickly access the different types of data from a common platform. Enabling the customized filter tools helps POLA scientists with their environmental reviews and impact-analysis reporting.

Due to the success of this tool, POLA staff retained Geosyntec to add biosurvey data in geospatial context. The webmap allows a variety of query, graphing, and export tools custom-built to meet POLA’s needs. The map layers are populated with data imported from laboratory deliverables and collected by field personnel using GPS-based mobile applications, including digital-survey stormwater-inspection forms.
