Project Specifics
The Norfolk Southern Railway Corporation, Inc. (NSRC) Moorman Yard is a major rail classification yard. Sanitary waste at the site is collected and treated before being discharged off-site via stormwater collection swales. Due to new expansion plans and desires to avoid potential discharge limit issues, NSRC needed to shift away from on-site treatment and transition to the local publicly owned treatment works (POTW) for handling the sanitary waste flows from the site.
Geosyntec Scope of Services
Geosyntec provided support with all design services and procurement for the replacement of the existing wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) containing a system capable of pumping sanitary wastewater to the nearby, off-site POTW collection system tie-in point. As part of the design we analyzed current and anticipated future wastewater production rates; designed upgrades and replacement of existing infrastructure for the sanitary collection system, wet well, and pumping system; and designed roughly 2.5 miles of buried forcemain. In the design phase, Geosyntec coordinated and supervised site surveying, evaluated forcemain route alternatives, developed all technical design drawings and the automation approach, developed detailed technical specifications for all procured and installed equipment and piping, and delivered cost estimates.
Notable Accomplishments
When completed, NSRC will be equipped with a system to transport 3,000 to 50,000 gallons of sanitary wastewater per day to the POTW. The new transortation system will help reduce costs to the client and allow for future expansion of the yard.
