Project Objective

Lake Hartwell occupies 56,000 acres along the South Carolina/Georgia border, is an important environmental resource, and provides a plethora of recreational opportunities, including outstanding fishing. In fact, after this project, the lake hosted the 2018 Bassmaster Classic, and numerous other high-level bass tournaments take place there each year.

Since 2011, Geosyntec has provided project planning, permitting, engineering, and consulting services to Anderson County to support the development of the Green Pond Landing and Event Center Project on Lake Hartwell. As part of a multidisciplinary team, we provided comprehensive consulting to support development of a six-lane mega-ramp and bass tournament facility.

Scope of Services

Geosyntec provided specialized facility planning, including boat-ramp access, orientation, trailer parking, and analysis of tournament-facility flow. A key element of project planning included consideration of highly variable site topography and the need for proper Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) access to all aspects of the project. Highly variable water-level fluctuations (~30 feet) also provided challenges with regard ramp and staging-dock design. We worked closely with the client and project team to evaluate and develop unique engineering solutions to site challenges. Specifically, the toe of the boat ramps were strategically set to allow launching at the lowest of water levels so that lucrative tournaments do not bypass the area for lack of adequate launching depth. This design also supports continuous, reliable access for local boaters.

We also guided the regulatory permitting for the boat ramp and floating docks through the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).

Notable Accomplishments

Since its redevelopment in 2015, the facility has hosted two Bassmaster Classics and numerous major B.A.S.S. events, including the 2018 Bassmaster Classic. Smaller weekend events also offer the area significant economic impact.
