The OSHA standard for The Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout), Title 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 1910.147, addresses the practices and procedures necessary to disable machinery or equipment, thereby preventing the release of hazardous energy while employees perform servicing and maintenance activities. This section requires workers to use safe work practices, including lockout and tagging procedures. These provisions apply when employees are exposed to electrical hazards while working on, near, or with conductors or systems that use electric energy.
Department of Defense Contractor in Illinois. Geosyntec provided on-site safety review and technical-writing services to develop lockout/tagout (LOTO) instructions for a Department of Defense (DOD) contractor. After completing a one-week energetic conservation assessment, compliance specific work involved with the development of photo-illustrated instructions for LOTO of approximately 175 pieces of equipment to prepare for an internal (company-initiated) audit of the facility. Most of the equipment instructions were associated with the manufacture of propellant and medium-caliber military ordnance. The project included a 4-week visit to the facility to review equipment-specific LOTO procedures, photograph the equipment and their various LOTO points, and draft the illustrated instructions. The facility passed the internal audit.
Private Manufacturing Facility, LOTO Program Development and Training in Wisconsin. Geosyntec developed equipment specific LOTO program for existing and newly installed manufacturing equipment. This project entailed assessing all the hazardous potential energy sources of individual pieces of equipment and identified controls to place in zero energy state. Our staff provided LOTO templates and senior review, as well as design and delivery of training programs for both affected personnel and for authorized personnel.
Hazardous Waste Treatment Facility in Missouri. Geosyntec provided on-site safety review and technical-writing services to develop LOTO instructions for a hazardous waste treatment facility in Joplin, Mo. This work was fundamental portion of the design and implementation of a comprehensive Process Safety Management (PSM) Program. The LOTO work involved the development of photo-illustrated instructions for LOTO of approximately 320 pieces of equipment. Most of the equipment was involved with the management and treatment of explosive material and ignitable waste. The project covered a total of three weeks to review equipment-specific LOTO procedures, photograph the equipment and their various LOTO points, and draft the illustrated instructions.
Private Manufacturing Facility LOTO Program Development and Training in Florida. Geosyntec performed an energy control audit of a specialty metal corporation. The project included performing a walk-through assessment, providing key personnel with training on using a procedure development tool.
