Project Specifics
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) owns and operates several bus washing facilities within the transportation tunnel in the greater Los Angeles area. Because the facilities discharge wastewater into the sanitary sewer, they maintain several industrial wastewater discharge permits (IWDPs) with utility companies including Los Angeles Sanitation District (LASAN), Los Angeles County Sanitation District (LACSD), and other local sanitation companies. The Metro facilities we support have different wastewater-flow quantity and quality, pre-treatment systems, and criteria for monitoring and reporting. To manage these variables, Geosyntec provides comprehensive industrial wastewater management services to Metro to support permitting and compliance.
Geosyntec Scope of Services
Geosyntec conducted routine sampling and managed general compliance with the IWDPs. To minimize costs to the client, we prepared self-monitoring reports and surcharge statements to support surcharge calculations. Our team continues to evaluate the performance of pretreatment systems, design new systems, and upgrade the systems as necessary.
Additionally, Geosyntec performed feasibility studies for water reuse and sustainability goals. We also conducted an overall alternative analysis that included a feasibility study and the design of treatment and pretreatment systems for wastewater recycling and reuse. We continue to support management of the industrial wastewater program throughout a network of Metro’s facilities.
Notable Accomplishments
Our success with the Metro projects strengthened our working relationships with LACSD, LASAN, and Metro. Thanks to our support of their industrial wastewater program, Metro has continuously maintained compliance with the applicable IWDP requirements and minimized surcharge fees. With our help, they mitigated operational issues with the pretreatment systems, avoided significant maintenance costs and violation fees, and identified opportunities for water reuse.
