Project Specifics

Geosyntec is providing project planning, field support, report preparation, and project management for groundwater sampling and installation of recovery wells at a site near Poplar, Montana, to help a confidential client to comply with a USEPA Emergency Order. The client maintains and operates product-recovery wells, brine-recovery wells, groundwater wells, and a groundwater-reinjection system at the site. The groundwater-sampling component of our work includes measuring static water levels for 27 to 37 monitoring wells and 4 domestic wells and monitoring on-site field parameters for each well. We are also collecting samples from the groundwater wells, domestic wells, and 11 recovery wells for TDS, chloride, and BTEX

Geosyntec Scope of Services

To support data collection and management, Geosyntec developed a field-data collection and reporting iPad application. The iPad app, the back-end server, and web application make extensive use of industry-standard open-source technologies including Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, HTML5, Open Layers, and JavaScript.

The app includes the following features:

  • Integrated data-visualization dashboard for viewing existing data
  • Digital forms to collect and transmit data
  • Well-formatted auto-generated reports for hassle-free reporting
  • Offline data storage for use in remote locations with intermittent connection
  • Onboard Open Layers map for viewing site and field-crew positions
  • Integration with the device’s camera to capture field photos and insert them into forms and reports
  • Integration with on-board GPS and location services to log coordinates

Notable Accomplishments

This iPad app allows field crews to more easily record and submit data collected during groundwater sampling events and during inspection and maintenance of the recovery and storage equipment, including logging the conditions of pumps, compressors, wells, and other equipment. A website mirroring the iPad app was deployed using much of the same code base to allow the client to track progress and remotely supervise field crews.
