Project Specifics
Geosyntec provides technical project management to the Baldwin Park Operable Unit (BPOU) cooperating respondents (CRs) for this Superfund site, including the characterization, hydraulic capture, and treatment of site contaminants of concern (COCs). Site COCs include chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), perchlorate, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), and 1,4-dioxane. To meet project objectives, Geosyntec performs 3D groundwater-flow and contaminant-plume modeling alongside water-quality-trend evaluations, data analysis and reporting, and site operation and maintenance.
Geosyntec Scope of Services
Geosyntec began providing project management and technical expertise on this project in 2013. As part of the primary scope, which includes implementing performance evaluation and reporting activities, Geosyntec’s 3D subsurface modeling team implements an innovative approach to refining the conceptual site model (CSM) via COC contaminant-plume mapping and groundwater-quality-trend evaluation using Leapfrog® to provide advanced statistical analysis of COC fate and transport. Groundwater modeling and particle-tracking analyses in FEFLOW enhances the 3D CSM by providing an additional layer of data to visualize COC fate and transport and support hydraulic-capture-remedial activities. Geosyntec uses these 3D models to efficiently communicate historical and ongoing site conditions and provide highly detailed site figures and cross-sections for regulatory deliverables.

Notable Accomplishments
Geosyntec works closely with the San Gabriel watermaster, water purveyors, and the project database manager to analyze operational data at numerous multiport-monitoring wells and water-supply wells. Consistent robust restructuring and refinement of the groundwater-flow-model calibration continues to facilitate an enhanced understanding of the complex and dynamic hydraulic-flow fields at the site. Geosyntec’s use of geostatistics and 3D modeling in Leapfrog® and FEFLOW provides invaluable data and visualization in support of the client’s groundwater optimization strategy and benefits reporting and negotiation with the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
