Rapid Wildfire Response

Wildfire Services

Since 1991, Geosyntec’s experts have rapidly assessed hazards in fire-affected areas to avoid secondary disasters like flooding and landslides.

Wildfire Services

Geosyntec’s experience-built approach to addressing post-fire conditions is widely valued by municipalities, federal and state agencies, and local stakeholders. We develop and implement emergency mitigation measures to reduce impacts to homes, infrastructure, and communities. In addition, we characterize and monitor the removal of ash and debris to reduce public-health hazards and protect water quality.

Clients often seek our expertise in the following areas:

  • Hazard mitigation assessment
  • Debris and erosion control
  • Litigation support
  • Burn ash and debris removal monitoring
  • BMP design and contractor oversight
  • Public outreach facilitation
  • Cost reimbursement support

Practice Specifics

Geosyntec practitioners lead novel post-fire water-quality studies, offer unique experience with the Clean Water Act, and conduct specialized modeling and risk assessments.

Our geohazards specialists address increased susceptibility to landslides, earth flows, debris flows, and channel scour or avulsion, as well as possible impacts to engineered structures, utilities, and public safety.

Fires can promote hydrophobic soils, decrease plant canopy interception, and increase sediment runoff, resulting in larger peak flows and potentially damaging mudflows. Geosyntec’s specialists in hydrology, hydraulics, and geomorphology evaluate watercourses and help re-establish natural processes.

Hazardous substances resulting from wildfires can pose significant threats through inhalation of dust particles and contamination of drinking water sources. We analyze ash and debris, monitor clearance, and oversee the demolition to minimize threats to public health and safety.

We partner with state and local governments and work closely with funding agencies to develop and implement post-fire hazard-response plans. We then help clients obtain funding-agency concurrence on hazard locations, as well as on materials and staff needed for mitigation.

Lead Practitioners

Looking for a partner in innovation?

Geosyntec supports our practitioners as they explore new ideas, find new uses for established technologies, and develop more efficient ways of serving our clients. We work across disciplines, often partnering with universities, researchers, and clients, to develop and commercialize leading-edge solutions.
