Integrated Water Resource Management Planning

Effective management of developed and undeveloped watersheds and stormwater runoff by public and private entities is a complex task from the scientific, regulatory, and policy perspectives.

Practice Specifics

Proper planning, design, and implementation of stormwater and other pollution controls, such as wastewater treatment, are needed create cost-effective controls, achieve desired benefits for the community, and comply with evolving local, state, and federal regulations.

Many of our clients face new regulations or policies that are not tailored to site-specific conditions or that rely on overly conservative assumptions. In other cases, clients may wish to undertake more sustainable practices voluntarily. Collecting the right data to make informed decisions in either case can be critical to avoid unnecessary expenses.

Securing the funding to implement integrated water resource management programs can be difficult. Having a firm that helps define and communicate the environmental and economic benefits of proposed controls, as well as their uncertainties, can be critical to gaining acceptance from elected officials, government agencies, and community stakeholders.

Geosyntec helps hundreds of clients meet these challenges by assembling multidisciplinary teams of respected and experienced professionals known for their innovative work in watershed and stormwater management.

Our scientists and engineers specialize in the following areas:

  • Asset management
  • Stormwater master planning
  • Green infrastructure
  • Stormwater best management practices (BMPs)
  • Low impact development (LID)
  • Watershed planning
  • Geomorphology and hydromodification of streams
  • National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting and receiving-water studies
  • Receiving-water monitoring
  • Hydrology and flood modeling

Geosyntec practitioners frequently consult with clients at the local, state, regional, and national levels to integrate watershed and stormwater planning into the fabric of their short- and long-term planning. Our clients include developers, cities, utilities, state agencies, the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), and nongovernmental organizations. Many of our projects involve planning efforts from the site level to watershed scales, often in partnership with key community stakeholders.

Our people help shape the state of the practice with joint research and project work with civil engineering faculty at outstanding academic institutions. We are active in original research, development, and application of emerging techniques and technologies.

As a result, Geosyntec is recognized for facilitating the transfer of technologies from academia to commercial and public uses. For instance, our professionals have been a critical and ongoing part of an award-winning team maintaining the International Database on Urban Stormwater BMP Design and Performance for the American Society of Civil Engineers and the USEPA. Our practitioners are key contributors to the new Agricultural BMP Database, a resource we helped the Water Environment Research Foundation develop.

Geosyntec staff also frequently present training sessions and workshops on stormwater management, NPDES regulatory program requirements, erosion and sediment control technologies, and BMP performance and design to a wide variety of audiences.
