Dave Cook is a Senior Principal Geologist based in Washington with more than 30 years of experience focused on managing complex environmental, geothermal, geohazard, and siting projects for large facilities such as data centers.
Dave is adept at projects that require creative strategies, detailed budget tracking, unique technical decisions, and communication with multiple involved parties. He has a long and successful history of leading projects from due diligence, through cleanup, redevelopment, and regulatory closure, transforming brownfield properties into productive uses.
Examples of such work include overseeing a large cleanup of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Headquarters, as well as due diligence and cleanup oversight of Amazon’s eight-city-block HQ in downtown Seattle, and large, multi-acre HQ2 in Arlington, Virginia. In addition, Dave is leading a 43-hectare brownfield development for a confidential client in Windsor, United Kingdom. He also provided strategic advising, pursued funding, and oversaw remediation of a multi-million-dollar contaminated site as part of its redevelopment into affordable housing for the Mt. Baker Housing Association.
As leader of Geosyntec’s geothermal services practice, Dave guides multiple heating and cooling studies across the United States. Several such projects address the feasibility of tapping groundwater from flooded underground mines in areas where data centers are being considered.
In addition, clients seek Dave’s support in overseeing emergency response actions and geohazard assessments. His work designing and implementing geothermal/geoexchange systems and ground source heat pumps to support energy transition and decarbonization is pathbreaking.
In service to his profession, Dave often lectures at universities and is an Affiliate Professor in the School of Earth and Sustainability at Northern Arizona University. He has served on committees with the Urban Land Institute and Downtown Seattle Association, Geoprofessional Business Association, and Engineering Change Lab. As a volunteer with Engineers Without Borders USA, Dave served as a mentor on water projects in Bolivia and Peru, on the board of directors, and, in 2016, as president.
