Chriso Petropoulou is a Senior Principal Environmental Engineer based in Illinois with more than 25 years of consulting experience focused on a wide variety of clients in the industrial manufacturing sector.
Her clients include foundries, metal products and metal recycling, rubber manufacturing, malting operations, aerospace companies, automotive manufacturers, electroplating operations, municipal waste landfills, power industry, gas pipelines, railroads, and nuclear laundries, and facilities designed to wash and dry radiation-contaminated clothing.
She also consults with clients specializing in polymers, organic chemicals, fertilizers, plastics and synthetic fiber, pulp and paper, pesticides, food products, and pharmaceuticals. As a consultant, Chriso has developed and implemented industrial water footprint plants to identify water use reduction opportunities and has performed several wastewater treatment plant optimization studies. She has prepared pollution prevention plans, design calculations, plans and specifications, and implementation schedules for various treatment systems. She also has extensive experience with sewer biofilm and deposit formation and sewer gas formation and movement in siphons, force mains, and gravity sewers. She has extensive experience with physical-chemical treatment processes for the removal of heavy metals, oil and grease, ammonia and other pollutants.
Specializing in large remediation projects involving site investigations, source identification, cost allocation, and remediation designs, Chriso has extensive technical and regulatory experience in the remediation of soil and groundwater impacts from chlorinated solvents, heavy metals, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAs), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), and non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL). She also has designed and implemented bench-scale, pilot-scale, and full-scale in situ and ex situ remedial treatment technologies, including: metal stabilization; chlorinated solvent bioremediation; evaporation and catalytic oxidation; advanced oxidation; nano-scale and micro-scale zero-valent iron (ZVI) treatment; soil vapor extraction (SVE) and carbon adsorption treatment; PCB and PNA low-temperature thermal treatment; and NAPL recovery.
To advance the state of the practice, Chriso has conducted treatability studies and prepared capital and operation and maintenance cost estimates for clients preparing for design implementation. She has extensive experience in National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System and pretreatment discharge permit negotiations and consults with clients on challenges related to permit limits (including seasonal limits), risk-based quality standards, and regulatory compliance.
