Geosyntec Project Cover Story for Geosynthetics Magazine

SAN DIEGO, Ca. — A Geosyntec Consultants project is the cover story in the August/September 2009 issue of Geosynthetics magazine. For the project, "Demonstration of Field-Scale Biofilter Cell System," Geosyntec provided design and construction quality assurance (CQA) services for the Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD) in southern California. Geosyntec staff members Ron Johnson, PE, GE, and Sang-Sik Yeo, PhD, as well as IRWD's Randy Sundberg, PE, developed the article.

The project purpose was to verify and evaluate the field-scale effectiveness and practicality of a subsurface biofilter cell system for removing selenium and nitrate from dry weather flows in Peters Canyon Channel. The authors discuss the background and need for the project, design and construction of the biofilter in detail, as well as various challenges that were overcome.
