Kwasi Badu-Tweneboah to Deliver Keynote Address at GeoAfrica 2013

Kwasi Badu-Tweneboah, Ph.D., P.E., a senior engineer and an Associate of the firm based in Florida, is a keynote speaker at the 2nd African Regional Geosynthetics Conference, or GeoAfrica 2013, set for November 18-20 in Accra, Ghana.

This year's event, hosted by the International Geosynthetics Society, will address the use of geosynthetics for sustainable development in Africa. As a keynote speaker, Dr. Badu-Tweneboah will explore the development challenges facing Africa and how geosynthetics use in its different applications can contribute towards sustainable solutions across the continent.

Dr. Badu-Tweneboah's keynote lecture is "Sustainable Development in Africa — The Role of Geosynthetics," with Geosyntec's Victor Damasceno (Tampa), Ramil Mijares (Jacksonville) and Rutuparna Joshi (Jacksonville) as his co-authors.

He also will present one of the general sessions at the event, "Challenges of Using Exposed Geomembrane Liners at Mining Sites: a Case Study" with Geosyntec's David Espinoza (Columbia, MD), Ranjiv Gupta (Austin), and Lucas deMelo (Columbia, MD) as co-authors.

In all, participants will attend more than 70 technical presentations from around the world and the African Region, each emphasizing the existing and potential application of geosynthetic technologies in the African context. This implies technological and social advancement of the industry to suit the needs of Africa and bolster developments appropriate to Africa, especially in the area of geosynthetics for roads in difficult subgrades; mining innovations; and waste management in developing countries.

Dr. Badu-Tweneboah has more than 20 years of consulting and research experience focusing on the design and construction of containment structures for solid and liquid wastes. His clients include commercial waste disposal firms, local governments, and manufacturing/process industries throughout the Midwest and Southeastern United States.

His practice at Geosyntec specializes in landfill design and permitting, geotechnical investigations, containment system design, resident engineering, and construction management/quality assurance. He also has extensive experience in the planning and implementation of construction quality assurance/quality control for the installation of geosynthetic and soil lining systems for landfills and other waste containment facilities.
