Geosyntec Announces Winners of 2024 Student Paper Competition

Congratulations to the winners of Geosyntec’s Fifteenth Annual Student Paper Competition. Each year, we honor and support top students who are studying groundwater. We sincerely thank all applicants and their supporting professors.

The winner of the 2024 competition is Diana Ramírez of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville for the paper, “An Unexpected PFAS Sink: PFAS Assimilation Into Bacterial Membranes.” Diana receives an all-expenses-paid trip to the Battelle 2024 Chlorinated Conference in Denver, Colorado, or a cash prize of $2,000 USD.

The two second-place winners received a prize of $1,000 each. Rachel A. Molé of Carnegie Mellon University was chosen for the paper,“Groundwater solutes influence the adsorption of short-chain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAA) to colloidal activated carbon and impact performance for in situ groundwater remediation,” and Jessica LaFond of Texas Tech University was chosen for the paper, “Biotransformation of a polyfluoroalkyl substance by oxygenase expressing bacteria.”

The three third-place winners received a prize of $500 each. Collin Ross Sutton of the University of Wisconsin, Madison was honored for the paper,“Novel approach to modeling flow and transport in fracture networks: a key to understanding the migration of contaminants in complex systems.” Ashley Lin of the University of Florida was honored for the paper,“Broadening Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance (PFAS) Assessment to Emerging Sources of Concern: Volatile PFAS in Landfill Gas.” Menglin Jiang of the University of Notre Dame was honored for the paper,“Low-Temperature Thermal Treatment of Portland Cement Concrete Contaminated with Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).”
