Geosyntec Announces the Appointment of 41 New Principals

The Geosyntec Family of Companies announces the promotion of 41 individuals to the position of Principal. Each of these new Principals has made significant contributions to delivering outstanding projects to first-class clients, developing strong relationships with those clients, building our practices, leveraging their own expertise and experience of their colleagues, recruiting outstanding staff, and working collaboratively with their coworkers.

Adam Gray (Maryland, US)

Adam was promoted to Principal and is a geologist and project manager with more than 16 years of experience supporting and managing environmental site characterization, remediation, risk evaluation, and compliance projects. He manages, designs, implements, and oversees contaminated site assessments, pilot tests, and remediation in soil, bedrock, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and soil gas on numerous large- and small-scale projects. Adam earned an MS in Natural Resource Sciences from the University of Maryland and a BS in Environmental Science, as well as a BS in Agronomy from West Virginia University. 

Adria Reimer, PG (Georgia, US)

Adria was promoted to Principal and is a geologist with more than 20 years of experience in contaminated site management, including initial site characterization and risk assessment; design, installation, and operation of remedial systems; and site closure. She often addresses large and complex petroleum and chlorinated solvent sites, as well as sites featuring vapor intrusion and fractured bedrock and karst regimes. Adria earned her MS and BS in Geology from Boston College. She is a registered Professional Geologist in Florida and Georgia.

Andries Venter (Western Australia, AU)

Andries was promoted to Principal and is a consultant with more than 30 years of experience in the management, design, and construction of a wide range of projects and participates in all phases of project management, from feasibility studies and concept design to commissioning. His experience includes the design, construction, operation, and closure of tailings storage facilities and conducting audits following local regulatory guidelines. Andries earned a Bachelor in Technologies in Civil Engineering (Construction Management) from the Central University of Technology and a National Diploma in Civil Engineering from Vaal Triangle Technicon.

Ashkan Arefi, PEng (Ontario, CA)

Ashkan was promoted to Principal and is an engineer and risk assessor with more than 18 years of experience assessing and managing contaminated sites across Canada. He focuses on brownfield redevelopment, including site investigations, vapor intrusion, risk assessment, and risk management. He consistently demonstrates his technical and problem-solving capabilities, and his commitment to exceptional deliverables, and client service. Ashkan earned an MSc in Environmental Engineering from University of Tehran, an MEng in Environmental System Engineering and Management from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and a BSc in Civil Engineering from Tehran Polytechnic University. He is a Professional Engineer in Ontario, as well as a Qualified Person, Environmental Site Assessment, and a Qualified Person, Risk Assessment, as defined by O.Reg. 153/04.

Balaji Seshasayee, PE (California, US)

Balaji was promoted to Principal and is an environmental engineer with significant experience in water and industrial wastewater treatment. Balaji has contributed significantly to major projects in the American Midwest and throughout the firm. He is a recognized subject-matter expert in industrial wastewater treatment and technology integration and in the treatment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. Balaji earned an MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, a Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Chicago, and a BTech in Chemical Engineering from Anna University in India. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Oregon.

Brent Lazenby (Louisiana, US)

Brent was promoted to Principal and is a scientist with more than 12 years of consulting experience specializing in multimedia nitrogen dynamics and remediation using biological processes such as nitrification, denitrification, and anammox. He often addresses volatile organic chemicals, metals, and other inorganics using technologies such as bioremediation, chemical oxidation, zero-valent iron, and phytomanagement. He is a technical expert in nitrogen-impacted sites, passive sampling, and in situ bioremediation of multiple constituents. Brent earned an MSc in Hydrogeology from the University of Waterloo and a BSc in Environmental Science from the University of Ottawa.

Brian Smith, PG (Utah, US)

Brian was promoted to Principal and is a geologist with more than 22 years of professional environmental consulting experience focused on site investigation and remediation, due diligence, environmental compliance, and permitting. He has been a key contributor to the startup and growth of Geosyntec’s Salt Lake City office. Brian earned a BS in Geology from the University of Utah. He is a registered Professional Geologist in Utah.

Cathy Crea, PhD (Ontario, CA)

Cathy was promoted to Principal and is an environmental statistician with more than 10 years of experience specializing in applying multivariate statistical methods in support of risk and site assessments, evaluating monitored natural attenuation for contaminated sites, designing applied research projects, developing statistical data analysis tools, and creating and managing environmental information management systems. She is widely sought-after to support projects with complex data sets that need defendable analyses. Cathy earned a PhD in Mathematics and Statistics, an MSc in Mathematics and Statistics, and a BA in French Language and Literature and Statistics from the University of Guelph.

Christopher Livingston, PE (Florida, US)

Chris was promoted to Principal and is an engineer with more than 10 years of experience focused on geoenvironmental engineering, coal ash residuals, and mining engineering. His contributions include management of one of our largest, most complex, long-term multidisciplinary projects. Chris earned a Master’s of Engineering, Mining, and Geological Engineering from the University of Arizona and a BS in Environmental Engineering Technology/Environmental Technology at Northern Arizona University. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Alabama and Florida.

Dave Sherman, PG (Pennsylvania, US)

Dave was promoted to Principal and is a geologist with more than 25 years of environmental consulting experience focused on site investigation, groundwater assessment and remediation, and vapor intrusion evaluation and mitigation. He has managed and planned numerous projects, including hydrogeologic investigations; large-scale compliance and performance monitoring programs; subsurface vapor intrusion assessments; analytical and numerical groundwater modeling; air monitoring; and remediation projects. Dave earned a BS in Environmental Geology from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a registered Professional Geologist in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New York.

Dawit Yifru, PhD, PG (Georgia, US)

Dawit was promoted to Principal and is a geologist with more than 17 years of environmental consulting experience providing technical and strategic support for a variety of clients. His work often involves geologic and hydrogeologic conceptual site model development, environmental statistics, regulatory compliance, hydrogeologic testing and data analysis, and innovative remediation technologies. Dawit earned a PhD in Environmental Geochemistry from the University of Georgia, an MS in Environmental Geology from the University of Akron, an MS in Hydrogeology from the University of Tubingen, and a BS in Geology from Addis Ababa University. Dawit is a registered Professional Geologist in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Dogus Meric, PhD, PE (Illinois, US)

Dogus was promoted to Principal and is an environmental engineer with more than 12 years of experience focused on the management and remediation of contaminated sediment sites and the development of tailored environmental solutions for brownfield and waterfront development efforts in North America and Australia. He helps clients by delivering effective, implementable, and economical solutions tailored to achieve their objectives as well as stakeholder and regulatory acceptance. Several of his projects involving sediment remediation and brownfield redevelopment received international awards. Dogus earned a PhD in Geoenvironmental Engineering and an MSc in Geoenvironmental Engineering from Northeastern University and a BSc in Civil Engineering from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Massachusetts.

Elisabeth Hawley, PE (California, US)

Elisabeth was promoted to Principal and is a civil engineer with more than 16 years of experience advancing environmental investigation and remediation projects involving site characterization, fate and transport, remediation, site closure, and litigation support. She focuses on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other contaminants of emerging concern, including 1,4-dioxane, 1,2,3-trichloropropane, and N-nitrosodimethylamine. Other areas of focus include adaptive site management, green and sustainable remediation, and transition from active to passive remedies. Elisabeth earned an MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a BS in Environmental Engineering Science from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a registered Professional Engineer in California.

Eric Stiffler, PG, PE (West Virginia, US)

Eric was promoted to Principal and is a geologist with more than 14 years of experience managing and performing due diligence assessments, environmental, geological, and geotechnical site investigations, remedial implementations, environmental compliance oversight, and geohazard studies in varying geologic conditions at facilities for multiple private industrial clients. Eric earned an MGsc and a BS in Engineering Geology from Texas A&M University. Eric is a registered Professional Geologist in Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, and Kentucky, and he is a registered Professional Engineer in Texas.

Fabian Benavente, PE (South Carolina, US)

Fabian was promoted to Principal and is a civil engineer with more than 28 years of experience focusing on environmental engineering and hydraulics and hydrology engineering in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and South America. His primary practice areas are municipal and industrial solid waste; he has also worked in stormwater engineering and environmental auditing. He has been the lead certifying engineer on many construction quality assurance projects throughout the Southeast US. Fabian earned a degree in Civil Engineering from the Universidad de la República in Uruguay. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Uruguay, and Chile.

Hari Parthasarathy, PhD, PE (Illinois, US)

Hari was promoted to Principal and is an environmental engineer with more than 12 years of industry and academic experience focused on water chemistry and water and wastewater treatment system design and operation. He has distinguished himself through his business development, project management, and mentoring on multiple projects involving per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Hari earned a PhD and an MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and a BTech in Industrial Biotechnology from Anna University. He is a Professional Engineer in South Carolina.

James Rayner, FGS (South West England, UK)

James was promoted to Principal and is a contaminant hydrogeologist with more than 21 years of experience in the assessment, management, and remediation of contaminated land in United Kingdom, Europe, North America, and South America. He specializes in developing advanced conceptual site models and evaluating contaminant fate and transport. His status as a subject-matter expert is reflected in his authorship of key guidance documents. James earned an MSc in Hydrogeology from the University of Birmingham and a BSc in Environmental Geology from the University of Leeds. He is a registered Fellow of the Geological Society of London.

Jay Griffin, PE, QSD (California, US)

Jay was promoted to Principal and is a civil engineer focused on geotechnical projects in the mining, dam safety, and waste containment industries. His experience includes design and construction of waste containment systems at municipal and hazardous-waste landfills, mine-waste cover-system design, geotechnical investigations and design work for power-industry clients, geotechnical support for Alaska-based projects, and dam safety inspections and reporting. Jay earned an MS in Civil Engineering from San Diego State University and a BS in Civil Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Jay is a registered Professional Engineer in California, Alaska, and Oregon. 

Jill Gaffigan (Georgia, US)

Jill was promoted to Principal and is a consultant with more than 25 years of experience executing complex solid-waste-management issues, focusing on waste reduction, recycling, beneficial reuse, and the sustainable disposal of domestic and international solid-waste streams and industrial byproducts. Her professional experience extends to municipalities in more than 20 states and provinces in the United States and Canada, as well as in Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Jill earned her BS in Interdisciplinary Studies in Engineering and Environmental Economics from Clarkson University.

Joey Hickey, CHMM (Oregon, US)

Joey was promoted to Principal and is a scientist with more than 27 years of experience providing environmental consulting and regulatory services to industry clients, municipalities, and government agencies. He is a key technical and project leader for many environmental and industrial stormwater projects in the US Pacific Northwest branch. Joey earned an MS in Environmental Science and Engineering from the Oregon Graduate Institute and a BS in General Science from Oregon State University. He is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager.

John Buyers, PEng (Ontario, CA)

John was promoted to Principal and is an engineer with more than 30 years of experience managing Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act and other remedial investigations and feasibility studies, remediation, removal action, and operation and maintenance projects in USEPA Regions 2, 5, 7, and 10 and in Ontario, Canada. He also addresses post-closure care of numerous landfill sites. John earned a BS in Geological Engineering (Water Resources Option) from the University of Waterloo. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario.

Joseph Ivanowski, PG (Georgia, US)

Joe was promoted to Principal and is a geologist with more than 15 years of experience designing, planning, and implementing geologic field investigations supporting various projects and clients. He has managed drilling operations, bedrock and soil characterization, and groundwater remediation for more than 50 sites. Joe earned an MS in Hydrogeology and a BA in Anthropology/Archaeology from Georgia State University. He is a registered Professional Geologist in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Keith Kroeger (Oregon, US) 

Keith was promoted to Principal and is an aquatic toxicologist with more than 25 years of experience evaluating the ecological impacts caused by contaminated sediments. Keith focuses on industrial waterways; in this capacity, he leads sediment, water-quality, and ecological studies for projects that relate to contamination and maintenance of dredged material. He also addresses source control from stormwater discharges and permitting of waterfront development projects. Keith earned an MS in Environmental Science and a BS in Environmental Health Science from Wright State University.

Kelly Havens, PE (California, US)

Kelly was promoted to Principal and is a water resources engineer with more than 14 years of experience specializing in applying her skills in environmental engineering, water chemistry, and geochemistry to green stormwater infrastructure, integrated water resources, and climate-change adaptation and resilience. She provides management and technical support on projects focusing on urban, industrial, and construction-phase stormwater management. Kelly earned an MS in Civil Engineering and a BS in Engineering Geology from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is a registered Professional Engineer in California.

Kim Huynh, PE, GE (California, US)

Kim was promoted to Principal and is a geotechnical engineer focused on the design, permitting, and construction of solid-waste containment systems, primarily for large waste management companies and municipal solid-waste facilities. Her expertise includes geotechnical field investigations, master planning and engineering design for landfill expansions and closures, and construction quality assurance and construction management services. Kim earned an MS in Geotechnical Engineering and a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a registered Geotechnical Engineer in California and a registered Professional Engineer in Hawaii, Arizona, and California.

Lauren Wellborn, PE (North Carolina, US)

Lauren was promoted to Principal and is an environmental engineer with considerable experience in environmental site investigation and the remediation of large, complex sediment projects and upland sites. Her experience spans all phases of investigation and remedial design for sites impacted by recalcitrant compounds, including mercury, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, chlorinated solvents, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Lauren earned an MS in Environmental Engineering and a BS in Environmental Engineering from North Carolina State University. She is a registered Professional Engineer in the District of Columbia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama and is a Registered Site Manager, North Carolina Registered Environmental Consultant Program.

Matthew Rendell, CEnvP (New South Wales, AU)

Matthew was promoted to Principal and is an environmental scientist with more than 15 years of experience in contaminated site investigation and remediation, site auditing, data interpretation, property due diligence, on-site reuse and offsite waste management, and project management. He is a recognized practice leader for vapor intrusion, hazardous-ground-gas services, and acid sulfate soils. Matthew earned a BS in Land and Water Science, Soil Science, Catchment Management, and Natural Resource Management from the University of Sydney. He is a registered Certified Environmental Practitioner in Australia and New Zealand.

Megan Otto, PE, QSP/QSD (California, US)

Megan was promoted to Principal and is a water resources engineer with 16 years of experience in green infrastructure planning, stormwater engineering feasibility studies, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, municipal and industrial National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permitting, stormwater and urban runoff monitoring and reporting, watershed planning, and litigation support. Megan earned an MS in Environmental Engineering from the University of Massachusetts and a BS in Environmental Engineering from California Polytechnic State University. She is a registered Professional Engineer in California, a Qualified Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) Practitioner, and a Qualified SWPPP Developer.

Michael Hansen, CHMM, BCES, CSP (Maryland, US)

Michael was promoted to Principal and is an environmental scientist with more than 19 years of experience in environmental-site characterization, remedial-action construction, and environmental compliance. He also supports environmental and civil engineering projects, including the oversight of drilling using hollow-stem-auger, air-rotary, direct-push, and sonic techniques. Michael earned a BS in Environmental Science and Studies from Towson University. He is a Certified Safety Professional, a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, and a Board-Certified Environmental Scientist.

Miguel Parames, PE, QSP/QSD (California, US)

Miguel was promoted to Principal and is a civil and environmental engineer with more than 12 years of experience in hydrology and hydraulics, construction services, and civil design. He designs erosion- and sediment-control practices, manages construction oversight, conducts post-fire erosion and flood-hazard assessments, and handles NDPES permit compliance. Miguel earned an MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Davis. He is a registered Professional Civil Engineer, a Qualified SWPPP Developer, and a Qualified SWPPP Practitioner in California.

Mike van den Enden, PG (California, US)

Mike was promoted to Principal and is a geologist with more than 19 years of experience in project management, remedial investigations and feasibility studies, and remedial actions at hazardous-waste sites. He has been the lead geologist for projects throughout California that involve asbestos, lead-based paint, PCBs, and regulatory compliance, among other hazardous-waste issues. Mike earned a BS in Geology from California State University, Stanislaus. He is a registered Professional Geologist in California.

Olga Stewart, PE, PMP (Alaska, US)

Olga was promoted to Principal and is an environmental engineer with more than 17 years of experience focused on site characterization, conceptual site model development, and site cleanup under the requirements of CERCLA, RCRA, and Alaska regulations. Olga excels at complex site work, forming collaborative teams with diverse skill sets to address difficult Alaskan logistics, using innovative site characterization tools, designing appropriate data collection and workflow systems, and resolving differing stakeholder opinions. In 2022, she became the first environmental engineer to win the Alaska Engineer of the Year Award in the award’s 50-year history. Olga earned a BS in Integrated Business and Engineering and a BS in Materials Science and Engineering from Lehigh University.

Panos Andonyadis, PE (Virginia, US)

Panos was promoted to Principal and is a civil engineer focused on earth retaining systems, slope stability, ground improvement, and site redevelopment. This work often includes design of marine bulkheads, micropile foundations, and landfills for coal combustion residuals. He conducts site investigations and manages construction quality assurance and construction quality control. Panos earned an MS in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a BS in Civil Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic University. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Illinois, New York, and Ohio.

Paul Leeger, QEP (Virginia, US)

Paul was promoted to Principal and is a wetland scientist with more than 20 years of consulting experience conducting environmental surveys and permitting for land-development projects. He has supported projects in the energy, urban-development, and infrastructure sectors. Paul has extensive experience directing and leading projects, including environmental-impact assessments, natural-resource impact permitting, and environmental due-diligence assessments for linear transportation, utility corridors, and utility-scale solar and battery-storage projects. Paul earned a BS in Environmental Science from Virginia Polytechnic University. He is a registered Qualified Environmental Professional, a Virginia Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Plan Reviewer, a Virginia Certified Dual Inspector, and a Virginia Certified Nutrient Management Planner.

Robert Sirianni, PG (Texas, US)

Bob was promoted to Principal and is a geologist with more than 13 years of experience in three-dimensional (3D) subsurface modeling and data analysis; 10 years were in the oil and gas industry, where he focused on resource estimation and modeling before transitioning to his current consulting career. Bob earned an MS in Geology from the University of Florida and a BA in Geological Sciences from State University of New York at Geneseo. He is a registered Professional Geologist in California, Texas, and Louisiana.

Shashank Bhardwaj (Dubai, UAE)

Shashank was promoted to Principal and is a consultant with more than 18 years of experience in construction and project management for ports, harbors, and coastal and maritime engineering projects in the Middle East. Shashank focuses on the construction services practice in the United Arab Emirates. Shashank earned a graduate degree in Project Construction Management from the National Institute of Construction Management and Research (NICMAR), Pune, India, and a B-Tech in Civil Engineering from Karnataka State Open University, India.

Tara Rolfe, PG, CHG (California, US)

Tara was promoted to Principal and is a hydrogeologist with more than 20 years of experience focused on potable water supply and sustainable groundwater development. Her work with public and private clients has included water-supply resilience, basin-wide water management, regulatory compliance, and litigation support. Tara earned a BA in Geology and Environmental Studies from Occidental College. She is a California Certified Hydrogeologist and a registered Professional Geologist in California.

Tasha Simon, PE (California, US)

Tasha was promoted to Principal and is a civil engineer with more than 13 years of experience in groundwater, soil, and vapor intrusion remediation, as well as in process engineering design and wastewater treatment and infrastructure. She has managed and supported multiple projects focused on site investigation and characterization, remediation performance evaluation, groundwater extraction and treatment, and vapor intrusion mitigation. She has also held numerous leadership positions with the Society of Women Engineers. Tasha earned an MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University and a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a registered Professional Engineer in California.

Todd Anderson, PE (Florida, US)

Todd was promoted to Principal and is an engineer with more than 35 years of experience focused on civil and geotechnical engineering and surface-water hydrology. He plans, conducts, and manages geotechnical site investigations, hydrology studies, and civil site work throughout Florida. Todd earned an MS in Civil Engineering from the University of South Florida and a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana.

Wendy Condit, PE (Michigan, US)

Wendy was promoted to Principal and is an engineer with 25 years of experience focusing on in situ and ex situ groundwater treatment and innovative technology demonstrations. She brings extensive experience facilitating stakeholder outreach and executing technology transfer initiatives for clients to promote innovative environmental restoration projects. Wendy earned an MS in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan and a BS in Agricultural Engineering from Cornell University. She is a registered Professional Engineer in Ohio.

Wesley MacDonald, PE (Tennessee, US)

Wes was promoted to Principal and is a civil and geotechnical engineer with more than 16 years of industry experience. He supports power-industry clients with a wide array of services for coal combustion residuals, dam safety and evaluation, and operations and maintenance projects. Wes earned an MS in Civil Engineering and a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Tennessee. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Washington.
