Rachel Zajac-Fay and Brent Pautler Present Webinar for the Society of American Military Engineers

Rachel Zajac-Fay, Geosyntec, and Brent Pautler, PhD, SiREM, will present "How Passive Samplers can Optimize and Reduce the Costs of Environmental Sampling Programs" at the Society of American Military Engineers Webinar, on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. EDT.

Their co-presenter is Jason McNew of EA Engineering, Science, and Technology.

This webinar highlights passive sampling devices (PSDs) and their many advantages over conventional sampling methods for quantifying the availability of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), hydrophobic organic compounds, and inorganic compounds in groundwater, sediment porewater, surface water, and stormwater in terms of cost and data quality. This webinar will familiarize remedial project managers with the tools and concepts they need to use PSDs at their sites. Topics covered include how PSDs play a role in managing contaminated sites, the types of PSDs commercially available, the theoretical basis of passive sampling, and applications best suited to passive sampling. The presenters will describe methods and approaches used to successfully implement PSDs into field programs and case studies and will address upcoming projects funded by the Department of Defense’s Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP).

Rachel is a Project Scientist and Ecological Risk Assessor with more than 13 years of experience focused on environmental management and risk assessments. She conducts research involving microplastics, and her work often addresses sediment and the groundwater–surface-water interface.

The Chemistry Services Manager at SiREM, a Geosyntec Company, Brent is an environmental analytical chemist with technical expertise in passive sampling, spectroscopy, chromatography, mass spectrometry, and chemistry informatics.

The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) aims to build leaders and foster collaboration among government and industry to develop multidisciplined solutions to national security infrastructure challenges. Founded in 1920, the society has a storied history of uniting the public and private sectors across disciplines, including architecture, engineering, construction, environmental and facility management, cybersecurity, project planning, and contracting and acquisition.
