Portsmouth Waste Disposal Project Wins the U.S. Department of Energy’s Project Management Excellence Award

The Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office won the 2022 Project Management Award of Excellence from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the Portsmouth On-Site Waste Disposal Facility (OSWDF)–Capital Assets Project #1 (CAP-1). The award was announced in April 2023.

The CAP-1 is the anchor project for cleanup of the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant. It provides disposal capacity to support the demolition of the 29-acre, two-story X-326 building as well as for material excavated from two on-site contaminated groundwater plumes. The CAP-1 was completed 22 months ahead of schedule and with significant cost savings.

The OSWDF’s design engineer of record, Geosyntec has supported the facility since 2011 as a subcontractor to Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth, LLC. More than 320 Geosyntec staff members have worked on the project, and Geosyntec continues to support Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth and the DOE on the ongoing OSWDF–Capital Assets Project #2 (CAP-2).
