Geosyntec Announces the Appointment of 23 New Senior Principals

The Geosyntec Family of Companies is pleased to announce the promotion of 23 individuals to the position of Senior Principal. Each of these new Senior Principals has made significant contributions to delivering outstanding projects to first-class clients, developing strong relationships with those clients, building our practices, leveraging their own expertise and experience of their colleagues, recruiting outstanding staff, and working collaboratively with their co-workers.

Adam King, P.E. (Orange County, California)

Adam joined Geosyntec more than 20 years ago and focuses on the assessment and remediation of impacted soil, soil vapor, and groundwater at industrial, brownfield, and hazardous waste sites. He develops site assessment and remedial action strategies that provide best-value engineering solutions and creative regulatory approaches enabling clients to meet their redevelopment, reuse, and closure objectives. Adam manages the Orange County Remediation Department and is a key leader in the office, always embracing Geosyntec’s values and going the extra mile for clients and colleagues. He has a deserved reputation for being a reliable manager of high-value clients. Adam earned an M.S. in Civil Engineering and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine in London; and is a registered Professional Engineer in California.


Ali Nasseri-Moghaddam, Ph.D., P.Eng. (Waterloo, Ontario)

Ali has more than 29 years of professional experience in geotechnical, dam, and structural engineering. His expertise includes dam engineering, earthquake engineering, risk management for underground structures, slope stability assessment, geotechnical design of tunneling works, and application of geophysics in geotechnical engineering. Ali manages the Canadian Operations geotechnical department. He has supported business development with Geosyntec’s existing clients and brought multiple sustained relationships with other strategic clients, playing a key role in business development with our mining, tailings, and dams initiatives. Ali consistently exhibits our core values and is known for his outstanding collaboration, commitment to mentorship, and willingness to share work. Ali earned a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical) from the University of Waterloo; an M.Sc. in Structural Engineering from the University of Tehran, Iran; and a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology, Iran. Ali is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario and British Columbia.


Anica Haynes (Baton Rouge, Louisiana)

Anica has more than 23 years of experience focused on technical and project management, primarily in the chemical, energy, industrial, and manufacturing sectors. She assists clients with capital project permitting, air and water quality permitting, and comprehensive environmental compliance and reporting. Anica is a driving force behind the growth of our Environmental Management practice firm-wide and currently serves as co-Chair of Environmental Management Steering Committee. She joined Geosyntec more than 12 years ago and leads the Environmental Management and Process Engineering Design department within the Gulf Coast and Energy Branch. Anica exemplifies our firm’s culture through her technical expertise, client-facing skills, entrepreneurialism, collaborative approach, and dedicated work ethic. She has been instrumental with numerous oil and gas clients and was key to securing the firm’s first carbon sequestration project. Anica earned a B.S. in Environmental Engineering from Louisiana State University.


Bailey Theriault, P.G., L.G. (Bedford, New Hampshire)

Bailey has more than 15 years of experience primarily focused on geohazard management for midstream oil and gas clients. She assists clients as the technical lead for projects to identify, assess, mitigate, and monitor geologic conditions and hazards along pipelines for major oil and gas pipeline operators in the United States and Canada. Joining us in January 2022, Bailey has already built a group of seven professionals in Bedford, New Hampshire. She is a traditional Sell-Manage-Do consultant with broad recognition for her geohazard management capabilities, expanding our services with existing clients while also securing new clients to the firm. Bailey is a thought leader, active in internal and external conferences, and coauthor of geohazard management guidance documents. Bailey earned an M.S. in Geological Sciences from the University of Arizona; a B.S. in Geology and Environmental Science from the University of Delaware; and is a registered Professional Geologist in New Hampshire and a Licensed Geologist in Washington.


Ben Martich, Q.E.P. (Anchorage, Alaska)

Ben has more than 26 years of professional experience focused in the areas of site characterization, conceptual site model development, and vapor intrusion assessment and mitigation. He helps clients using advanced investigative tools and technologies to understand and refine conceptual site models and evaluate contaminant fate and transport. Ben opened the Anchorage office in 2013 and has been the primary lead for establishing a Geosyntec presence in Alaska, identifying clients and market opportunities, hiring and mentoring staff, and overseeing project management and implementation. He has developed and expanded a wide variety of clients, including government, oil and gas, mining, telecommunication, consulting companies, and law firms. Ben has maintained a national profile in the vapor intrusion practice, having been a trainer and serving on Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council (ITRC) vapor intrusion teams. He has been on the Vapor Intrusion Steering Committee since 2014. Ben earned a B.S. in Mathematics and a B.A. in History from Furman University and is a registered Qualified Environmental Professional by the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice.


Chris Wessel, P.E., QSD/QSP (Los Angeles, California)

Chris has over 14 years of experience in green infrastructure development; Best Management Practices; watershed planning; municipal and construction stormwater compliance; and water resources engineering. With more than 13 years at Geosyntec, his project experience has included project planning, development and design, funding strategies, alternative project delivery, and project optimization. Chris manages the Los Angeles Westside Department and is a valued leader in the California Water Resources Branch. His cross-selling expertise has led to multidisciplinary contracts with clients. Chris earned both a B.S. and M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UCLA and is a Professional Civil Engineer and Qualified SWPPP Developer and Practitioner in California.


Hamid Amini, Ph.D., P.E. (Orange County, California)

Hamid has more than 20 years of experience delivering environmental engineering and civil development projects for public and private clients. His project experience includes water and wastewater management process engineering design and construction; sustainable solid waste management design and construction; compliance monitoring; renewable energy generation; hydroelectric power plant design; onshore oil drilling platforms; and construction quality assurance. Hamid is a major contributor to branch leadership, growth, and technical advancement and is actively engaged in developing work that benefits multiple other branches throughout the firm. He manages the Orange County Branch’s process engineering group, is a member of the Process Engineering Design Steering Committee, and provides significant contributions to the Industrial Water Practice Group. He has been with Geosyntec for 11 years, during which he has continually set a great example with a positive attitude and willingness to go above and beyond for clients and colleagues. Hamid earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Central Florida; an M.S. in Environmental Engineering and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Iran University of Science and Technology; and is a registered Professional Engineer in California.


Jeff Ahrens, P.E. (Charlotte, North Carolina)

Jeff has more than 19 years of experience focused on environmental assessments; remedial system design and optimization; assessment and mitigation of the vapor intrusion pathway; environmental due diligence and liability valuation; and regulatory compliance. Among his key strengths is helping clients manage investigations and corrective actions at complex sites contaminated by chlorinated solvents, petroleum hydrocarbons, and inorganic compounds. Jeff’s entire 19-year consulting career has been with Geosyntec, where he has distinguished himself as a technical leader in the groundwater practice, making significant contributions to the Groundwater Steering Committee. He is one of the leaders in North Carolina’s initiatives to build its attorney client base. Jeff earned an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Michigan Technological University; a B.S. in Integrated Science and Technology from James Madison University; and is a registered Professional Engineer in Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia and a Licensed Remediation Specialist in West Virginia.


Jeff Tyburski, P.G., R.S.M. (Raleigh, North Carolina)

Jeff has more than 34 years of experience focused on brownfield redevelopment solutions to support property due diligence and acquisition, site redevelopment design, site construction, and post-occupancy property management. Jeff has managed the redevelopment of more than 30 brownfield sites to support urban infill initiatives for developers and municipalities. He is highly visible in the North Carolina developer community with developers and their attorneys, bolstered by his service on association committees. He also has strong relationships with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Brownfields Redevelopment Section, a critical asset he brings to his clients. Jeff mentors more than a dozen early- and midcareer staff in the Carolinas to learn the brownfield program. Collaborating with several seniors in the Carolinas and beyond, he is now successfully pursuing USEPA-led brownfield grant project opportunities. In addition, he pursues environmental management compliance work and has won industrial compliance projects. Jeff earned a B.A. in Geology from the University of Rochester; is a registered Professional Geologist in North Carolina; and is a Registered Site Manager in North Carolina.


Jennifer Nyman, Ph.D., P.E. (Oakland, California)

Jennifer Nyman has over 17 years of experience in the characterization and remediation of soil and groundwater. She has served as program and project manager, technical expert, and technical lead on large and complex sites. Her roles have included leading regulatory interactions and negotiations with the USEPA and various state and local agencies. She is a strong contributor to all elements of our Sell-Manage-Do model. She joined our firm nine years ago, is committed to developing staff, and founded the San Francisco Bay Area Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Task Force. Jennifer earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering and an M.S. in Environmental Science and Engineering from Stanford University; a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Montana State University; and is a registered Professional Engineer in California.


Jesse Varsho, P.E., P.G (Oak Brook, Illinois)

Jesse has more than 21 years of experience in environmental consulting, landfill engineering, construction quality assurance, permitting, compliance, and project management for solid waste management clients throughout the United States. During his six years with Geosyntec, Jesse has distinguished himself as the quintessential Sell-Manage-Do professional. He started and has grown a successful solid waste department in the Midwest Branch and provides leadership in developing and executing remediation projects. He is known as an outstanding project manager and is a sought-after subject matter expert for legal matters involving landfill siting and odor management. Jesse earned a B.S. in Geological Engineering and a B.S. in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Wisconsin; is a registered Professional Engineer in Illinois; a registered Professional Geologist in Illinois; and is licensed to practice engineering in nine other states.


Kaitlyn Rhonehouse, P.E. (Wilmington, North Carolina)

Kaitlyn has more than 17 years of experience focused on the assessment and remediation of contaminated properties, property transaction environmental due diligence, compliance and permitting evaluations, valuation of environmental liability, brownfields negotiations and redevelopment, and vapor intrusion assessment and mitigation. In her 15 years with Geosyntec, Kaitlyn has distinguished herself as a successful networker and business developer, as evidenced by contributions to 70 projects executed in 2022. She started our Wilmington office in 2018 and continues to grow it while providing leadership to the Environmental Management Practice Group, the Brownfields Practice Group, and the Legal Sector Initiative. She is active on external committees such as the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce Environmental Policy Committee, NC Bar Association Continuing Legal Education committee, and ASTM committee for the new ASTM standard for Phase I Environmental Site Assessments. Kaitlyn earned a B.S. in Environmental Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is a registered Professional Engineer in Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia.


Marc Leisenring, P.E. (Portland, Oregon)

Marc has more than 21 years of experience focused on stormwater master planning, watershed and storm system modeling, environmental data analysis, regulatory compliance, and water quality management. He is a senior leader in the water and natural resources practice in the Pacific Northwest, co-managing that department. Marc has developed relationships with local clients, generating repeat work and expanding services. He is committed to mentoring staff, is known as a strong collaborator across the firm, and is an ambassador of Geosyntec values. Marc earned an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Portland State University; a B.S. in Environmental Resources Engineering from Humboldt State University; and is a registered Civil Engineer in Oregon.


Mark Johnson (Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina)

Mark has more than 27 years of experience focused on transactional support, site investigation and remediation, subsurface vapor intrusion to indoor air, environmental management assessment and systems, and brownfield redevelopment planning and design. He has distinguished himself as a broad-based environmental management practitioner and has a significant litigation support practice for several major groundwater contamination cases. He leads the firm’s pursuit of opportunities with the CAT Alliance as well as a portfolio of environmental due diligence projects for law firms. Mark earned an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park and a B.A. in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Johns Hopkins University.


Maygan Cline, P.G., QSD/QSP (Santa Barbara, California)

Maygan has more than 16 years of experience focused on hydrogeologic site characterizations, in situ and ex situ remediation technologies, regulatory liaison, site closure, and property redevelopment for private and public clients. She joined Geosyntec over six years ago and has managed complex projects and portfolios by leading and motivating multidisciplinary teams to achieve mutually agreeable client and regulatory objectives. Maygan manages the Santa Barbara Branch, which consists of almost 40 staff, and she opened the Ventura, California, office. Maygan earned a B.S. in Geological Sciences from the University of California, Santa Barbara; is a registered Professional Geologist in California; and is a Qualified Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan Developer and Practitioner in California.


Mehmet Iscimen, P.E., CPESC (Kennesaw, Georgia)

Mehmet has more than 18 years of professional experience focused on the areas of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, solid waste disposal facility design, and construction oversight. He specializes in managing large, multidisciplinary projects conducted under multiple state and federal regulatory frameworks, focusing on coal combustion residuals (CCR) management and landfill design. He has distinguished himself as a technical leader within the CCR market, a leader within one of our major client programs, and as an incredibly successful recruiter for early- and midcareer talent. He manages the Civil Design and Engineering Services department in the Atlanta Branch. Mehmet earned an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology; a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Boğaziçi University in Turkey; is an NCEES Professional Engineer and Certified Professional for Erosion and Sediment Control; is a registered Professional Engineer in Alabama and Georgia; and is licensed to practice in three other states.


Michael Hayes, P.E. (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

Mike has more than 27 years of experience focused on water and wastewater treatment; pumping systems and pump stations; remediation of hazardous waste sites; brownfield redevelopment; solid waste facility capping and closure; petroleum distribution; storage tank design and containment; site investigations; and wetlands mitigation. In his more than 16 years with the firm, he has established himself as a top leader in the firm in Industrial Water and Process Engineering Design. Mike launched and leads the firm’s process engineering design center in Pittsburgh and is widely recognized by colleagues across the firm for strong collaboration. Mike earned an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Marshall University Graduate College; a B.S. in Civil Engineering from West Virginia University; and is a registered Professional Engineer in Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, and West Virginia.


Nathan Higgerson (St. Louis, Missouri)

Nathan has more than 22 years of experience in consulting and private industries focused on fossil fuel and renewable power, mining, environment, and solid waste engineering projects. Nathan joined Geosyntec in 2018 to provide leadership in St. Louis, Missouri, and his efforts have resulted in a sustainable and flourishing operation. Nathan also helped position the Midwest to create a Power and Utility department, which he leads. He leads work to build a Midwest mining practice that includes services for water treatment, water permitting, geotechnical, and compliance. He also provides leadership in the coal combustion residuals (CCR) engineering group and leads Central Region marketing efforts in renewable energy. Nathan earned an M.S. in Business Administration from Southern Illinois University and a B.S. in Geological Engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology.


Paula Hutchison, P.Eng., QPESA, QPRA (Waterloo, Ontario)

Paula has more than 17 years of environmental engineering experience assisting clients internationally. She helps clients address complex environmental due diligence and compliance challenges, contaminated site management, and brownfield redevelopment. Paula joined Geosyntec in 2016 and has distinguished herself as an environmental due diligence practice leader, growing and managing a team of due diligence practitioners in Canada who have delivered multiple portfolio opportunities. Paula earned a B.A.Sc. in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Specialization from the University of Waterloo. Paula is a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario and a Qualified Person for Environmental Site Assessment and Qualified Person for Risk Assessment.


Steve Poirier, Ph.D., P.E. (Acton, Massachusetts)

Steve has more than 18 years of experience focused on contaminated site assessment and remediation; slurry walls; design and construction of geoenvironmental and geotechnical engineering projects; planning, permitting, design, and construction of waste containment facilities; and offshore wind support. Steve is the New England Branch Manager and excels at relationship building and people development. He joined Geosyntec 18 years ago and has developed a proven track record of strategic recruiting and developing internal candidates, fueled by a passion for helping others succeed. Before becoming Branch Manager in 2022, he served as Department Manager for five years, where he grew headcount and net revenue and led an expansion into new practice areas. Steve earned a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst; and is a registered Professional Engineer in Massachusetts, Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.


Tamara Hebeler, P.E. (Kennesaw, Georgia)

Tammy has more than 23 years of experience focused on all aspects of environmental engineering, including site assessment, high-resolution site characterization, remedial design and implementation, and comprehensive regulatory compliance. During her 23 years at Geosyntec, Tammy has demonstrated a significant commitment to the company and our core values. She has developed excellent client relationships and distinguished herself as a multifaceted practitioner and leader within the firm. She is a key contributor to our federal sector practice and manages the Remediation and Compliance department in the Atlanta Branch. Tammy earned an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology; a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Syracuse University; holds Georgia Level 1A and Level II Stormwater Certification; and is a registered Professional Engineer in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.


Trevor Carlson, QP (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan)

Trevor has more than 29 years of experience focused on environmental remediation projects, including the characterization and remediation of hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, inorganics, and radionuclides. Trevor approaches his interactions and experiences as a lifelong learner who freely shares knowledge with others. He is enthusiastic about bringing novel solutions to complex problems, particularly in situ groundwater applications for treating recalcitrant contaminants. His partnerships with First Nations and building brand recognition in western academic circles is growing our presence in new geographies and markets. Trevor is the Department Manager for our western Canada remediation department. Leading a start-up office, Trevor develops relationships within Geosyntec and is committed to collaboration. Trevor earned a B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Regina. Trevor is a registered Qualified Person in Saskatchewan.


Yonas Zemuy, P.E. (Orange County, California)

Yonas has over 20 years of experience in landfill and geotechnical engineering. His expertise includes experience with landfill construction, laboratory testing programs, interpretation of in situ subsurface conditions, landfill design and CQA, geotechnical and retaining wall assessment, and landfill gas to energy evaluations. Yonas anchors a newly expanded geoenvironmental practice group in San Diego that is growing rapidly. Yonas has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to Geosyntec, as well as exceptional delivery of service to our clients. He is committed to collaboration and is one of the inaugural members of the firm’s Diversity Council. Yonas earned an M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering; a B.S. in Civil Environmental Engineering from the University of California; and is a registered Professional Engineer in California.
