Geosyntec to Present at Geo-Congress 2023

Jaime Mercado, PhD, S.M.ASCE (Tennessee), Pourya Kargar (Missouri), and Gizem Bozkurt, PhD, PE (Georgia), will contribute to Geo-Congress 2023 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California, on March 26 through 29, 2023. In addition, Santiago Caballero, PhD, PE, (California) and Jerko Kocijan, PhD, PE, GE (California) will attend.

Jaime will present “Coal Combustion Residuals Geotechnical Behavior Under Dewatering Activities” on March 27 at 1 p.m. Pourya will present “Evaluation of Two Numerical Modeling Approaches for Liquefaction Investigation of Fines-dominated Soils at Wildlife Liquefaction Array Case Study” on March 27 at 2:30 p.m. Gizem will serve on the student professional development workshop panel on March 26 at 2:30 p.m. (all times PST). In addition, Geosyntec is sponsoring the inaugural Shamsher Prakash Lecture and our staff will attend the Student Travel Grant Winners Job Fair and Student Reception.

Jaime is an Engineer who specializes in geotechnical engineering, soil-structure interaction, and geotechnical and structural earthquake engineering. He has researched the behavior and performance of geotechnical structures from experimental and numerical viewpoints. His experience also includes liquefaction analyses, geotechnical design, slope stability, foundation design, and urban excavation.

Pourya is a Senior Staff Engineer and a PhD candidate at Southern Illinois University where he is seeking his second graduate degree in geotechnical engineering. He has worked to design and construct tunnels, embankments, excavations, levees, foundations, and other geo-structures in the United States, Iran, Canada, and Mexico. He also investigates the cyclic response of soils to evaluate liquefaction in sites with susceptible media.

Gizem is Senior Engineer who focuses on engineering design and analyses for geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering projects, including civil design and site layout, field investigations, site characterization, and assessments of soil slopes and foundations. She also works to manage coal combustion residuals, including siting, design, and permitting of disposal facilities.

Geo-Congress 2023, hosted by the Geo-Institute, invites engineers, academics, and others to speak on topics that address challenging geotechnical issues. The conference includes a wide range of technical and panel sessions, short courses, and workshops.

The Geo-Institute promotes the geotechnical profession and helps members advance their careers through specialty conferences, journals and practice-oriented publications, educational programs, networking and coalition building, technical committees and task forces and leadership on emerging issues. Its 13,000 practitioners and over 60 organizational members include scientists, engineers, technologists, and organizations interested in improving the environment, mitigating natural hazards, and constructing economically engineered facilities.
