Amanda Caron and Emmie Chen to Present on Environmental Forensics for the Chicago Bar Association

Amanda Caron, P.E., (South Carolina) and Emmie Chen, P.E. (Georgia) will present the online event "Applications of Environmental Forensics" at 12:15 p.m. CST on February 7, 2023. The event is hosted by the Young Lawyers Section (YLS) of the Chicago Bar Association and will address how environmental forensics is applied at complex contaminated sites.

Amanda is a Project Environmental Engineer who specializes in environmental site characterization and forensics, contaminant fate and transport, and data analysis, visualization, and interpretation. Amanda serves environmental litigation project teams, where she supports remedial cost allocation and cost recovery at sites undergoing remediation under CERCLA. Results of her work have helped to minimize her clients' liabilities in cost allocation proceedings.

Emmie is a Principal Environmental Engineer with more than 13 years of experience focused on site investigation and remediation, contaminant fingerprinting and source identification, and site history forensics and environmental cost allocation at complex upland and sediment sites. She applies her technical knowledge on the historical use, production, and environmental fate and transport of a range of contaminants, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and metals, to support litigation under federal and state regulatory programs. Her work includes generating third-party nexus packages, assessing contaminant fingerprinting, and developing informative site visuals to establish key links between historical process operations and the contaminants driving remediation at the site.

The YLS offers opportunities for professional growth, community service, and networking to its approximately 7,000 members, all attorneys in their first 10 years of practice and law students. This year, the YLS will offer approximately 25 substantive committees, implement over 50 member and public service projects, and host numerous seminars and networking events.

Abstract

Applications of Environmental Forensics
Environmental forensics is the science of using analytical, statistical, and historical research methods to identify connections between environmental impacts and applicable contaminant sources at a site. This field of study involves the evaluation of analytical data in conjunction with a review of site ownership and operational history information and evidence of contaminant release pathways to establish nexus and inform legal strategy. Applications of environmental forensics aim to understand the nature and extent of impacts at contaminated sites and can serve as integral tools for client liability valuation and cost allocation.
