Ken Yass and Tina Liu to Present at the Midwest Environmental Conference; Geosyntec Practitioners to Attend, Host a Booth, and Sponsor

Ken Yass, P.E., CHMM, (Wisconsin) will present "Building Environmental Compliance Programs that Outlast the Great Resignation" and Tina Liu, P.E., (Missouri) will present "Understanding the Macro Problem that is Microplastics at the Midwest Environmental Compliance Conference (MECC) at the Kansas City Convention Center in Kansas City, Missouri, September 13 and 14, 2022.

In addition to Ken and Tina, Geosyntec's Phil Harvey, P.G., (Missouri), Suzanne Gabriele (Colorado) Jessica Yeager P.E., LSP (Kansas), and Michael Jury, P.G., (Kansas) will attend. Geosyntec will host a booth (#16) and is sponsoring the event. The event will also be livestreamed.

Ken Yass is a Principal Engineer with over 25 years of experience focused on environmental compliance. He often advises clients on air permitting and emissions, spill prevention control and countermeasure (SPCC) planning, Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) compliance and reporting, industrial stormwater management and pollution prevention planning, hazardous waste management, and wastewater permitting.

Tina Liu is a Senior Engineer with more than 10 years of experience addressing civil and environmental projects, including environmental site assessment, remedial investigation and design, industrial wastewater, environmental compliance, emerging contaminants, and project controls. She has contributed to large-scale projects for power industries in the Northeast and Midwest United States and has experience with manufactured gas plants, landfills, coal combustion residual plants, and other industrial facilities.

MECC examines the new environmental reality under the Biden/Regan era. The conference takes a fresh, regional approach to the increasingly difficult task of environmental compliance, permitting, enforcement, and other critical environmental issues that impact Midwest facilities and institutions. It addresses regional compliance issues and rapid changes to the field, provides insights and diverse perspectives, and fosters meaningful conversation and networking with colleagues, regulators, clients, and potential clients.

MECC is hosted by state business and manufacturing associations and is supported by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and state agencies.

The Great Resignation has taken a major toll on organizations whose compliance programs are based on people rather than processes. This presentation will showcase methods for environmental compliance programs that outlast turnover.

Microplastics in the environment come from a variety of sources and may be the next big contaminant of emerging concern. Research is being conducted on microplastic sources, fate, and transport in the environment in order to better understand the effects on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and human health. This presentation will explore the current state of knowledge of microplastics research, the data gaps that still need to be addressed, and the challenges in developing a regulatory framework.
