The 51st Spring Conference on Environmental Law is focused on the future of environmental law and how emerging topics and trends are fundamentally changing ABA practices to set up success both for these issues and for the environment. Panels will focus on change that is happening in real time and share experiences with novel approaches taken to bring solutions to climate change, sustainability, clean air, agriculture, chemical management, natural disaster response, and other transformative issues.

The American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (SEER) fosters the success of a diverse community of environmental, energy, and resources lawyers, advisors, and decision-makers and provides a premier forum for the exchange of ideas and information. SEER is a meeting place where practitioners can find the most current and sophisticated analyses of the complicated issues facing their practice.

Abstract for Prevent Pitfalls with Proactive Public Planning and Prescient Private Partnerships

Transitioning to low-carbon energy can be a long and winding road - for both governmental agencies driving policy, as well as private companies seeking to improve their carbon footprint. For agencies driving efforts to reduce climate change, there are multiple paths to clean energy, each with tradeoffs. We will examine intertwined legal and technical issues which inevitably arise when balancing the often-competing interests of stakeholders. A policy roadmap with proactive planning can pave a path to success!  For private sector clients seeking to reduce their carbon footprint, the journey through this changing landscape may lead them to energy subject matter and counterparties unfamiliar to their industry. We will discuss specific challenges in procurement, contracting, risk allocation, regulatory filings, and public communications, which can be best addressed when the right partnerships of technical support and legal advice come together.
