Geosyntec's Bryte Landfill Project Named ASCE Region 9 Outstanding Environmental Engineering Project

The Bryte Landfill Project, for which Geosyntec provided project management, engineering and design, and construction oversight support, has been named Region 9 Outstanding Environmental Engineering Project by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Sacramento Section.

The project was completed by a team that included the Sacramento Area Flood Agency (SAFCA), MBK Engineers, Odin Construction, and representatives from Sacramento, Yolo County, and the Department of Toxic Substance Control. Geosyntec's Andy Andrews, P.E., who served as project manager, senior engineer, and Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) officer, will accept the award on behalf of SAFCA on April 22, 2022.

Geosyntec developed the concept and was the project designer and project coordinator. In addition, we interfaced with the Department of Toxic Substance Control and provided construction CQA and field oversight. Geosyntec staff who contributed to the project included Joe Niland, P.E., John O'Leary P.E., G.E., Alyssa Yu, George Hichborn, and Fabrizio Settepani, P.E., G.E. (California).

This award recognizes projects which demonstrate significant design and construction achievements in the field of environmental engineering, including projects that improve water quality, restore/enhance natural habitats and marine environments, protect sensitive species, restore/provide for migratory fish passage, remediate contamination, and where innovation improved the state of the practice for environmental engineering. This includes implementation of new methods, improvements on existing methods, and incorporation of emerging technology. 

The nation's oldest engineering society, ASCE stands at the forefront of a profession that plans, designs, constructs, and operates society's economic and social engine—the built environment—while protecting and restoring the natural environment.

About the Project

The former Bryte Landfill in West Sacramento was used as a municipal solid waste and construction debris burn dump from approximately 1940 through 1974, and possibly as late as 1981. This project, adjacent to the existing north levee of the Sacramento Bypass near its confluence with the Yolo Bypass east levee, was completed in preparation for an expansion of the Sacramento Weir and Bypass. It involved the design, engineering, permitting, real estate acquisition, and remediation of approximately 13 acres of landfill to prevent potentially toxic materials from dispersing and to remediate soil and groundwater. Ultimately, all waste waste-impacted soil was moved into Corrective Action Management Unit (CAMU). Compared with a removal and disposal option, the project approach saved the client 30 million dollars.
