Pete Peterson to Speak about Sustainable Waterfront Planning at Florida Tech's Lifelong Scholar Society

Pete Peterson, P.E. (Florida) will present "Coastal and Waterfront Planning Basics: Designing for Resiliency" at the Lifelong Scholar Society and Florida Tech's Thursday Night Lecture series. The event will be both in-person and virtual, held via Zoom and at the Folliard Alumni Center in Melbourne, Florida, at 6:00 p.m. EDT on March 31, 2022.

Pete Peterson is a Principal Waterfront Engineer at ATM, a Geosyntec Company who has over 30 years of experience managing waterfront and coastal engineering projects throughout Florida, the southeastern United States, the Carribbean, and Central America. This work includes sustainable marina projects, waterfront redevelopment after hurricanes, coastal resilience projects, and wave screens, breakwaters, and attenuators. Pete is an alumnus of Florida Tech.

Florida Tech's Lifelong Scholar Society is a project of the university's office of advancement. It brings together a community of scholars, alumni, and residents who are passionate about sharing knowledge. Their Thursday Night Lectures, held throughout the year, address topics ranging from historical writers and contemporary art to Florida habitat, space exploration, and more.

About the event:

Coastal and waterfront engineering requires a unique approach that is very different from typical upland developments. The goal is to protect and even enhance the asset (development, natural resource, etc.) while working within the natural system to the extent practical. Every site is unique, and although the approach is similar, the conditions at the site dictate the engineering solution. To ensure the project's success, accurate, reliable base data from which to establish project feasibility, planning, and ultimate design and construction is essential. This presentation will walk participants through the steps to realize a successful coastal/waterfront project while providing real-world examples from projects all over the globe.
