Geosyntec Staff to Contribute to RemTech 2021

Geosyntec professionals will be delivering five presentations and moderating a session at Remediation Technologies Symposium 2021 (RemTech 2021) at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Banff, Alberta, Canada on October 13–15, 2021.

Geosyntec is a Silver Sponsor of the event. Savron, division of Geosyntec, will also be represented at RemTech2021. Employees from both organizations — Silvia Mancini, Meggen Janes, Paul Nicholson, Sarah Miles, and Laura Kinsman will be participating, presenting, and staffing a booth.

Silvia Mancini, Ph.D., (Ontario) is a Principal Geoscientist at Geosyntec with more than 17 years of experience in soil, groundwater, and surface water treatment of organics, inorganics, and metals remediation. She received her doctoral degree from the University of Toronto where she focused on technologies including bioremediation and stable isotope analysis. At Geosyntec, Silvia provides technical direction for water treatment projects and innovative remediation technologies including using smouldering combustion (STAR), in situ chemical oxidation/reduction, gravel bed bioreactors (GBRs), and permeable reactive barrier (PRBs). Silvia also provides expert opinions and litigation support for cases in Canada and the United States. In addition, she authors journal articles and manages government research programs focused on innovative methods and technologies for site characterization and remediation. These programs include the Natural Science and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC) as well as the United States Department of Defense Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP).

Meggen Janes, (Ontario) is a Principal Environmental Engineer at Geosyntec with more than 25 years of experience focused on remediation of soil and groundwater, as well as significant experience in Brownfield approvals. Meggen develops unique strategies for restoring and redeveloping public realm spaces using soil reuse, remediation techniques, and risk management measures to maximize use of these remediated and redeveloped spaces.

Paul Nicholson, P.Eng (Ontario) is a Senior Engineer at Geosyntec with 15 years of experience in environmental consulting. His practice focuses on assessing and mitigating human health risks associated with sub-surface vapour intrusion, including developing many large scale vapour intrusion assessment programs for properties with as many as a 1,000 buildings and prioritizing properties based on a building specific conceptual site model using historical soil and groundwater information.

Laura Kinsman, (Ontario) is a Professional Scientist at Savron, a Geosyntec company, where she focuses on developing and implementing the STAR technology for smouldering remediation. Laura completed her master's degree under the direction of the inventors of the STAR technology and, since joining the company, has been actively involved in system installation, field operations, and project management across North America and Asia. Her work includes both pilot testing and full scale applications of both in situ (STAR) and ex situ (STARx) smouldering remediation.

Sarah Miles, Ph.D., (Ontario) is a Senior Staff Scientist at Geosyntec who specializes in the bioremediation and mycoremediation of contaminated sites, particularly those affected by chlorinated hydrocarbons, petroleum hydrocarbons, oils sands, and mine tailings. While completing her PhD at the University of Alberta, Sarah worked extensively on oil sands tailings remediation projects, specifically on treatment of the naphthenic acid fractions within oil sands tailings water. There, her projects used microbial isolates, the native microbial community, and chemical oxidation multistep treatments to degrade this target organic fraction.

RemTech provides an annual forum for experts in the fields of contamination remediation and industrial pollutant treatments to present new and cutting-edge technologies. The symposium is organized by the Environmental Services Association of Alberta (ESAA) and receives support from government agencies, academic institutions, and private sector organizations active in site remediation and research.
