Lelio Mejia to Present the Ralph B. Peck Lecture at IFCEE 2021

Lelio Mejia, Ph.D., P.E., G.E., M.ASCE, NAE will present the Ralph B. Peck Lecture titled "Earthquake Cracking of Embankment Dams" at the International Foundation Conference and Equipment Expo (IFCEE) at 4:00 p.m. EDT on May 11, 2021.

Lelio Mejia is a Senior Principal Engineer based in California with more than 35 years of experience in geotechnical and earthquake engineering. For many years, he has focused on the challenges of dam and levee engineering and is a leading international authority in this field, with emphasis on the seismic design and performance of dam structures. Lelio leads Geosyntec's Western U.S. dams and levees practice and is a registered civil and geotechnical engineer.

The Ralph B. Peck Medal Lecture is presented annually by a geotechnical engineer recognized by the Geo-Institute for outstanding contributions to the profession through the analysis and publication of case histories.

IFCEE is a technical conference and equipment show dedicated to the design and construction of foundation systems, using the latest geo-engineering and geo-construction technologies and practices. The potential for earthquake-induced cracking is a key consideration in the evaluation, design, and construction of dams. Considerable effort has been made by the dam engineering profession over the last few decades to study the nature and effects of earthquake cracking of embankment dams, and to develop design measures to mitigate its potential occurrence. In his Peck Medal lecture, Dr. Mejia will provide an overview of the effects of earthquakes on embankment dams, discuss potential modes of embankment dam failure by cracking, review some of the basic concepts from mechanics of cracking in soils, discuss the analysis of dam cracking in practice, and present two case histories of embankment dam cracking and key conclusions.
