Abstract
By examining case studies (one on mining impacts on drinking water in the Navajo Nation and one on redlining in the Rondo Neighborhood of St. Paul, MN and subsequent health issues related to air pollution), we will demonstrate how social justice issues can in turn create environmental justice issues. We will specifically highlight the role of civil, environmental, and geotechnical engineers in creating the environmental justice issues and in fixing the issues. The overall goal of the presentation is to show students who are choosing their majors how careers in civil, environmental, and geotechnical engineering can both perpetuate social injustice and try to rectify it to ultimately show their larger role in society.
