Duane Graves Discusses Pooled Saliva Surveillance for Senior Living Facilities at Town Hall

Duane Graves, Ph.D. (Tennessee) presented at Kisco's Greensboro facility town hall discussing Geosyntec's role in providing early warnings for senior living residents with pooled saliva surveillance and testing.

Kisco employees discussed how they have helped their residents and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, and highlighted their effective use of pooled saliva surveillance and testing. Ed Ward, Vice President of Operations, reviewed the overall approach to keeping residents safe and Duane Graves explains the pooled saliva surveillance and testing process in detail. Employees and residents shared their stories about the success of the program. Highlights from participants in the video included:

I like to think [my parents] are in the safest place I could possibly have them in this time…friends, staff, and parents are being tested. It's a tremendous peace of mind not only for the families but for the residents. -- Dr. Gergen

With pooled testing we've seen relief. We've got attendance increasing in exercise centers. With pooled testing it allows a more secure environment. They want to guard their lives and make sure they're safe. The pooled testing has brought security with being around people here, but also with their family and friends. -- Gina Rice

Dining is a very communal experience. From an associate who's been here a while it's been really nice to have the opportunity to get back into the dining room. Trust and confidence have allowed us to do this. We opened up [the dining room] at our campus about three weeks ago. We have communicated almost every day about the steps we are taking to keep everyone safe. The dining room has gotten busier and busier. Seeing the smiles on their faces, hearing how grateful they are to be with other folks and to get in there and enjoy a meal. -- Will Eubank

Pooled saliva surveillance and testing informs operational decisions on outbreak risk mitigation while balancing business continuity. Our approach employs pooled saliva samples from populations of people who interact with each other in the course of their day. Surveillance monitoring involves the collection of anonymous individual samples of saliva that are pooled and analyzed to provide an indication of the presence or absence of SARS-CoV-2 in the pooled population. A negative result clears the entire population as SARS-CoV-2 free at the time of sampling and allows continuation of normal operations. A positive result indicates that some within that pooled population are shedding the virus and also indicates that the others in the community are at risk. The facility's COVID-19 response plan will guide appropriate actions in the event of a positive result.

For over 30 years, Kisco has specialized in developing and managing full-service senior living communities that provide an enriched lifestyle. Our unique philosophy and approach for safety and security, trust and transparency, and five-star service delivery have always been our top priorities. Kisco leads the way in ensuring associates and residents have peace of mind, knowing that our communities deliver on the promise of Kisco Confidence.
